The Hub is one chain
Name the chain holding an account or asset before interpreting its balance.
Cosmos is an ecosystem. Cosmos Hub is a specific blockchain within it.
- Source chain: original asset
- Transfer channel: escrow
- Destination chain: traced voucher
Start with the network name
Cosmos Hub uses ATOM as its native asset and connects with other chains through IBC. Another Cosmos chain has its own ledger and applications. A wallet displaying both chains does not combine their balances into one onchain account. Identify the selected chain before interpreting any balance or transaction.
A transferred token carries a route
IBC can escrow a source asset and create a destination voucher. Its denomination trace records port and channel information. Inspect the trace behind an ibc/ hash; a symbol alone cannot identify the origin or route.
Draw two ledgers
Use the Hub documentation and a blank sheet. No wallet connection is needed.
- Draw separate boxes for Cosmos Hub and a different Cosmos chain.
- Put native ATOM in the Hub box and a traced IBC representation in the other.
- Label the connection with a channel and leave actual channel IDs blank until verified.
A cross-chain representation needs an origin and route, not just a familiar symbol.
Name the chain first, then identify the exact asset on that chain.
Progress stays on this device.
