Separate a persuasive story from the action that puts money or access at risk.
A stranger can write a wonderful introduction. Your first job is to find the verb: send, install, reveal, approve or sign.
- Who is asking?
- What changes if I agree?
- How can I check independently?
- Pause if the answer is missing
Follow what they want you to do
Crypto scams often borrow a trusted identity or promise unusually easy profits. A giveaway that asks for a payment to multiply your money, or a caller directing you to a supposed safekeeping wallet, gives you a concrete request to examine. Their logo, confidence and impressive screen balance do not establish who controls the destination.
Time can be part of the trap
Investment fraud can unfold through a relationship rather than a single suspicious message. The person builds trust, introduces a platform and encourages deposits. A small successful withdrawal may be used to persuade someone to commit more. Treat the history of friendly contact and the investment's independent evidence as separate questions.
Give yourself an exit
When a message demands urgent action, verify it through contact information you find independently. Do not let the sender choose both the claim and the person who confirms it. Pausing is useful even when the message has polished grammar and a familiar name. An unexplained request is enough reason to decline without proving a crime.
Case file: the midnight multiplier
Fictional message: 'You were selected. Send 40 SAMPLE coins in the next eight minutes and receive 400 back.' Work on paper only.
- Circle the exact action requested and cross out the promised reward for a moment.
- Write who would control the coins after sending them.
- Write a reply you do not need to send: 'I will check independently and I am not paying to unlock a prize.'
The promise can be elaborate while the request is simply to send away your money.
A good story does not answer what your signature or payment will authorize.
