Create an unfunded wallet and check Base's settings.
An EVM-looking address does not tell you which network balance you are viewing.

A phrase-based MetaMask example
Install through MetaMask's official site. Create a new wallet with its Secret Recovery Phrase option, keep the 12 English words offline in order, and follow its password prompts.
Select Base before copying
Select Base Mainnet, 8453, or Sepolia, 84532, using Base's current guide. ETH pays fees. Copy its public address from the account menu and compare it with the wallet. Network selection does not move balances. Stop unfunded.
Compare network cards
Observe the guides, or optionally configure a new unfunded wallet.
- Open the Base connection guide.
- Write Mainnet and Sepolia IDs separately.
- Add a public-address check to each card.
Read the network label alongside the account address.
Check the chain before checking the balance.
