Identify token-control and liquidity questions without treating a popularity badge as a safety guarantee.
Give the chart a smaller box in your notebook. Leave room for who controls the token and whether anyone can actually sell it.
Being able to buy proves very little
A honeypot token can allow purchases while preventing sales. A liquidity rug can remove the assets traders expected to swap against. Inspect the token's behavior and liquidity evidence, not just its displayed price or trading activity. A successful purchase does not establish that the reverse trade will work or that liquidity will remain.
On Solana, examine the authorities
Solana token mints can have mint and freeze authorities. Those roles concern creating supply and freezing token accounts. Check the actual mint and its authority state rather than accepting a screenshot saying 'safe'. Authority settings describe specific powers; they do not by themselves certify an entire project or explain how its liquidity is controlled.
On XRPL, understand the issuer's powers
XRPL issued tokens can have freeze settings, and eligible tokens may support clawback when enabled under the protocol's rules. These capabilities have legitimate uses but matter to holders. They do not apply to native XRP in the same way. Read the issuer's actual settings and terms instead of assuming every asset on XRP Ledger has XRP's properties.
Use labels to ask better questions
Token warnings may flag impersonation, concentrated ownership or high selling fees. Read the meaning of the specific label. For your own research, record separately the token identity, control powers, liquidity evidence and unanswered questions. Community enthusiasm belongs in another column; it cannot answer a technical permission question for you.
The four-box token inspection
Invent a fictional token called HOMEWORK. Research no real purchase and connect no wallet.
- Draw four boxes: exact identity, control powers, liquidity, unanswered questions.
- Place '10,000 group members' outside the four boxes. It does not establish any of those technical facts.
- Add 'mint authority status unknown' to unanswered questions and 'a chart is visible' to observations.
- Write a conclusion limited to your evidence: 'I do not yet know who can change supply or remove liquidity.'
A research gap is a reason to stop, not permission to fill it with confidence.
Ask who has power and where the exit liquidity comes from.
