裏付けとなる出典A network built to amend its own rules, with a culture shaped by bakers, artists, and arguments over who should fund growth.
Tezos is a proof-of-stake network whose protocol includes an amendment process. Its native asset is tez, usually listed as XTZ. The network, the Tezos Foundation, development teams, and artistic communities are related but distinct. Its history is as much about exercising governance and building cultural institutions as it is about proposing governance. Technical upgrades, treasury spending, and token demand require different evidence.

The original proposal made change part of the design
The 2014 whitepaper proposed a blockchain that could replace its economic protocol through a formal amendment mechanism. Its architecture separated a general shell from the rules governing transactions and consensus. This was an attempt to make coordinated evolution a normal capability rather than a permanent source of emergency negotiation. It did not remove the need for people to write proposals, understand their consequences, or decide whether the system still served them.
The design also made participation in proof of stake part of the proposed political economy. Those holding and delegating the asset would influence the network through defined mechanisms. That is narrower than a claim that every participant receives equal influence. Stake, access to technical expertise, and the ability to organize around a proposal remain consequential. Formal governance makes some decisions observable; it does not automatically make their distribution fair or their substance wise.
The Foundation dispute preceded the operating network
Reuters reported in February 2018 that foundation president Johann Gevers had stepped down and that Ryan Jesperson would take over after a dispute that had impeded the project. This institutional conflict belongs in the history without being recast as a failure of a live on-chain vote. The network's amendment machinery could not resolve a disagreement inside a separate organization before launch simply because the project promised governance technology.
The Foundation's launch-era explanation distinguishes the open-source protocol, the network formed by people running it, and the Foundation itself. These are different objects. A foundation can provide resources and support without becoming identical to the ledger, while tokenholders do not become shareholders of every associated organization by holding tez. Keeping those boundaries visible prevents later grant or marketing decisions from being incorrectly described as automatic instructions from the protocol.
Foundation resources follow a separate institution
A 2020 Foundation Q&A describes the organization as a steward of its own assets that funds independently managed teams and projects. It assigns funding and asset-management strategy to the Foundation Council. This historical account helps explain why protocol self-amendment does not automatically amount to direct tokenholder control of foundation reserves. The system for accepting a new consensus rule and the system for approving a grant have different decision-makers and records.
The same Q&A addresses community questions about compensation, financial reporting, baking, marketing, and grants. Those questions demonstrate that demands for transparency were present well before the later sports-sponsorship debate. The document is a snapshot of the Foundation's 2020 positions, not a current roster or spending report. Its enduring relevance is the institutional distinction: a network can make protocol votes public while participants still seek better visibility into how supporting organizations allocate resources.
Betanet was not a disposable rehearsal
The Foundation announced the betanet launch on June 30, 2018. It described the start of an operating network and the path toward broader baking participation. The later mainnet designation did not mean that every earlier balance and contract was thrown away and replaced by an unrelated chain. For users, this continuity matters more than the label: an early network can retain economic state while its maintainers become more confident about operating conditions.
The Foundation's 2019 report records September 17, 2018 as the mainnet transition and describes the first amendment period the following year. These are separate milestones: one concerns the status of the running network, the other its ability to adopt new rules through its governance mechanism. A timeline that simply says Tezos launched in 2019 misses the operational history and the reason the first amendment attracted attention.
A proposal has to pass through a process
The documented amendment process has proposal, exploration, cooldown, promotion, and adoption periods. Bakers participate using stake-based voting rights, with thresholds that determine whether a candidate advances. The sequence gives participants time to discuss and evaluate code rather than turning every forum suggestion into an immediate protocol change. It also creates identifiable points at which support can be insufficient, a proposal can fail, or an alternative can be introduced.
Tezos Improvement Proposals serve a different role. The TZIP process covers standards and ecosystem conventions that may be discussed off-chain and adopted by applications or tools. A token-interface standard and an amendment to the base protocol can both matter, but their authority is not the same. Readers should check whether a proposal changes consensus, recommends an application convention, or merely describes an idea that has not been adopted.
Delegating and staking are different choices
A baker helps produce and attest to blocks. Delegating lets a holder assign baking power while retaining a liquid balance, whereas staking places value into the protocol's staking arrangement and changes its exposure and reward treatment. The official staking guide distinguishes these paths. Treating both as an interchangeable savings account hides important differences in availability of funds, reward distribution, and the consequences of a baker's behavior.
Adaptive issuance connects the creation of new tez to the share of supply committed to staking under protocol rules. Its purpose is to influence the security budget, not to promise a fixed investment return. A displayed reward rate is only one part of the economics: supply growth, a baker's performance, fees, and penalties affect outcomes. The current protocol documentation should take precedence over an old screenshot advertising a stable annual percentage.
The network has changed its consensus and economics
The amendment history records Athens in May 2019, Tenderbake through Ithaca in April 2022, and Paris on June 5, 2024. These are examples of substantive changes rather than repeated cosmetic renaming. Paris included the data-availability layer and major staking and issuance changes. The record also includes rejected proposals, an essential counterweight to describing governance as an inevitable sequence of approvals.
Liquidity baking illustrates why bundled technical upgrades can become political arguments. In the Granada discussion, participants questioned the choice of assets and the inclusion of a subsidized liquidity mechanism inside a broader amendment. A person could support other engineering improvements while disliking that economic policy. Formal voting makes a result executable, but the composition of the proposal still determines which tradeoffs voters must accept together.
Michelson favors precise specifications
Michelson is a strongly typed, stack-based smart-contract language designed with formal reasoning in mind. That helps make contract behavior explicit and supports proofs about specified properties. It does not mean every deployed contract has been proved correct. A language can make a method easier to apply while leaving the developer responsible for the specification, the proof, and the assumptions about the surrounding system.
The testing documentation complements that approach with practical ways to exercise contracts before deployment. Consider a contract that correctly enforces a payment rule but uses an incorrect external price: proving the payment rule would not establish that the price is economically sound. Tests, formal methods, and reviews address different failure modes. Tezos's technical identity is strongest when these methods are explained precisely rather than compressed into a claim that smart contracts cannot fail.
Execution can move while settlement remains important
Smart Rollups execute application logic outside the ordinary base-chain execution path and use the Tezos protocol for their settlement framework. Their kernels define application behavior, while commitments and dispute mechanisms connect that behavior to the chain. A rollup therefore needs more than a fast benchmark: participants need data, a functioning challenge process, and an understanding of the rules under which claims about execution become accepted.
The 2024 Tezos X roadmap proposed a broader arrangement of execution and consensus responsibilities. Its appeal was to reduce fragmentation while supporting more application environments. A roadmap should be read as a design direction with dependencies, not a list of capabilities already available to every user. The later history of Tezos X is particularly useful because it shows development teams adjusting the path rather than preserving every early idea unchanged.
The 2026 roadmap became more specific
The April 2026 joint update from Nomadic Labs, Trilitech, and Functori described bringing EVM and Michelson interfaces onto a shared execution ledger. The proposed advantage is atomic interaction: related operations can succeed or fail together instead of requiring an application to coordinate separate environments. The update also revised priorities, including the timing of additional language interfaces. It should be cited as the teams' plan, with deployment milestones checked independently.
The May 4 Previewnet announcement supplies a concrete milestone: a public test environment for the combined interfaces. A September essay by Kyriakos T. also explained that the earlier idea of automatically moving existing Layer 1 state had been dropped. That essay labels its predictions as the author's expectations. Existing applications' choices, rather than a presumed compulsory migration, are therefore central to understanding how this architecture may affect the ecosystem.
Art communities gave Tezos a public life
Tezos's art materials trace the growth of Hic et Nunc from March 2021 and the later ecosystem of marketplaces and collective projects. Low-cost interaction helped make repeated minting, collecting, and experimentation practical. But an artistic community is not just a throughput statistic: its norms involve curation, collaboration, attribution, and how newcomers are welcomed. Those practices can persist across marketplace changes even when trading volume rises or falls.
Merchant Coppola's community interview describes participation in Hic et Nunc and Teia through the perspective of an artist and organizer. It provides a specific voice rather than a claim that all artists chose Tezos for the same reason. The account emphasizes community organization and cultural contribution, reminding readers that some participants evaluate a chain by the relationships and creative spaces it supports, not by whether its asset outperforms another one.
Visibility and developer support compete for attention
Manchester United announced its Tezos partnership in February 2022. The announcement establishes a real marketing relationship, not its return on investment. A familiar logo on training clothing can reach people who would never read a protocol paper, but exposure does not identify how many of them later use a wallet or build an application. Sponsorship history belongs beside measurable follow-through rather than standing in for it.
TezDev's 2024 account records another path to visibility: developers, technical presentations, and direct exchange among builders. This provides a concrete contrast with the community debate over sports marketing. Conferences can also be ineffective if they generate little sustained work, so the useful comparison concerns outcomes rather than assuming that one category of spending is inherently virtuous. Applications maintained after an event are stronger evidence than attendance alone.

将来の可能性A global sports audience could become a user base
証拠ファイルを開く
Some holders welcomed sports visibility as a route to recognition; others asked whether it could turn into meaningful adoption.
物語の出所
The February 2022 r/tezos discussion of Tezos branding around Manchester United.
記録が裏付けること
- The thread mixes enthusiasm about familiar football personalities with skepticism about whether the audience would understand or use the network.
証明できないこと
- The presence of a sponsor's name does not establish wallet adoption, developer retention, or revenue.
- Comments are reactions from a particular online discussion, not a measured evaluation of the partnership's effectiveness.
注目する点
- Attributable onboarding, repeated use, and transparent campaign objectives would help connect recognition with practical results.
- If exposure grows while the conversion path remains unclear, the investor hope still rests on an untested connection.
記録に残る信念Fund builders before broad advertising
証拠ファイルを開く
A competing community argument favors developer events and tooling over spending primarily on brand recognition.
物語の出所
The April 2022 r/tezos thread proposing more developer conferences.
記録が裏付けること
- Participants argued that attracting builders could create applications and network effects, while replies pointed to existing events and questioned the premise that no such work was happening.
証明できないこと
- A development-focused budget still needs evidence that useful projects survive beyond hackathons and grants.
- The discussion does not prove that sponsorship and developer support are mutually exclusive or that one caused the other's shortcomings.
注目する点
- Follow-up support, maintained repositories, useful integrations, and returning developers would support the argument's practical case.
- Repeated short-lived demos would weaken a claim that moving spending categories alone solves adoption.
議論のある解釈A liquid market can justify a protocol subsidy
証拠ファイルを開く
Liquidity-baking supporters argue that deeper markets benefit the network broadly enough to warrant shared funding.
物語の出所
Galfour's January 2022 Tezos Agora explanation, explicitly offered as a personal position.
記録が裏付けること
- The post argues for liquidity's value while recognizing disagreement over the specific design and considering an alternative proposal without liquidity baking.
証明できないこと
- A subsidy redistributes value and its preferred trading pair can favor one route over another.
- A participant's economic model is not proof that actual volume, user benefits, and costs will match the forecast.
注目する点
- Measured use, the cost of the subsidy, and the availability of credible alternatives can make the dispute more concrete.
- A successful amendment vote settles an implementation choice for that period, not the permanent truth of its economic justification.
記録に残る信念The community should outlive any marketplace
証拠ファイルを開く
Some artists treat open collective institutions as the durable value of their on-chain activity.
物語の出所
Merchant Coppola's account of Hic et Nunc and Teia, alongside the ecosystem's record of artist-led projects.
記録が裏付けること
- The interview connects creative participation with community maintenance and shared cultural work rather than reducing involvement to token appreciation.
証明できないこと
- One organizer cannot speak for every artist, collector, or marketplace.
- A welcoming culture needs continuing labor; open code and low fees alone do not guarantee fair curation, attribution, or compensation.
注目する点
- Collective maintenance, portable artistic records, and participation that survives a marketplace change would support the claim.
- An ecosystem that depends entirely on one operator or on short bursts of speculative trading would be a weaker expression of that ideal.
