Mode
A DeFi network whose incentive experiments evolved toward automated trading.
Mode is an OP Stack network with ETH gas, a separate MODE token and an AI-finance strategy. September 2026 records identify Conduit’s administrative ownership, superseding older descriptions of shared Optimism control. Its proof and upgrade permissions remain important dependencies.

The original builder offer included a share of execution revenue
Mode’s developer page presents an economic offer alongside familiar Ethereum tooling. It describes sequencer-fee sharing for applications, developer distributions and help applying for ecosystem funding. The page also contains older promises and forthcoming-program language, so it is not a current audited schedule of payments to every developer. A team considering the offer needs to distinguish eligibility, actual distribution and recurring income.
Fee sharing can improve an application’s economics only if people use it and the relevant contracts continue to distribute revenue on the stated terms. Publishing a contract alone does not generate the underlying fee revenue.
MODE ownership and Mode gas are separate roles
The official network directory identifies Mode mainnet as chain ID 34443 and its Sepolia test network as 919. Both use ETH for transaction fees. MODE is therefore not required merely because a wallet needs native gas on the network. This distinction matters when an exchange, bridge or portfolio screen places the project token beside the chain name. The directory also identifies the Ethereum bridge contract, providing a more precise connection between the networks than a ticker or logo.
An asset displayed on both Ethereum and Mode still needs a supported deposit route and correct contract identity. Familiar addresses do not mean that a receiving exchange supports both ledgers or can automatically credit a transfer sent through the wrong one.
The token design funds several different constituencies
Mode’s tokenomics document specifies a fixed total supply of ten billion MODE. It allocates thirty-five percent to user and developer distributions, nineteen percent each to investors and core contributors, and twenty-seven percent to the foundation and onchain treasury. Investor and contributor schedules include a cliff followed by linear vesting. These allocations help explain why a fixed maximum supply can coexist with substantial changes in the amount available to trade. The page’s static circulating-supply number should not be treated as a September 2026 measurement.
Its stated utilities concern governance, campaigns, grants and ecosystem development. Those roles do not automatically make MODE a claim on application revenue, a share in the operating company or the asset used to secure Ethereum.
The first airdrop tied part of its allocation to continued participation
The ended Season 1 documentation records a May 2024 transition from points to MODE. It applied a special vesting arrangement to the highest-ranked wallets: half was available initially, while the remainder depended on keeping assets in the ecosystem over a ninety-day period. Departing early reduced that later allocation on a proportional basis, and unclaimed or forfeited tokens could be redirected to later rewards. These were rules for a historical campaign, not a standing entitlement for every current account. They also show how an incentive program can influence apparent retention.
Remaining deposits during a reward window may reflect the cost of forfeiting tokens as well as satisfaction with an application. The two explanations cannot be separated by a deposit total alone.
Early staking rewards came from an OP incentive allocation
The May 16, 2024 staking announcement added a ten-week OP incentive program for MODE stakers. Rewards depended on the amount and duration staked, with a cooldown on exit and claims on OP Mainnet. This was an allocation of another ecosystem’s token, rather than evidence that Mode’s own transaction fees could permanently support the advertised return. It also required participants to understand two networks and different operational steps.
The program can explain why an investor wanted exposure to MODE at that moment, but its historical reward rate should not be carried forward as a current yield. Sustainable participation requires a continuing source of value after a fixed grant or promotional allocation is exhausted.
Vote escrow directed subsidies toward selected applications
Season 4’s rules distinguish veMODE from the position obtained by staking an eighty-twenty MODE and ETH liquidity-pool token. Voting power grows with participation, and each group directs a separate allocation of OP incentives. Protocols compete for gauge votes, with external bribe infrastructure supporting payments to voters. The same rules require recipients to explain and report their distributions or risk losing eligibility. This is governance over incentive routing, not proof that every token voter controls the bridge or sequencer.
It creates a specific political economy: applications seek liquidity, voters choose recipients and grants subsidize user behavior. Judging the experiment requires examining who receives the incentives and whether the funded activity continues once those incentives change.
The next season extended eligibility beyond conventional protocols
Season 5 expanded the incentive experiment to streamers and agents, linking education and engagement with the project’s AI-focused direction. Its documentation retained OP as the principal reward asset and required participants to disclose how they distributed incentives. This broadened the definition of a contribution: explaining an application or attracting users could compete with supplying liquidity to it. That can support onboarding, but it also makes the quality of the contribution harder to infer from a payment alone.
A streamer’s audience, a protocol’s deposits and an agent’s transactions are different outputs. Transparent reporting is needed to show what was purchased and to avoid treating every rewarded action as evidence of independent demand for the network.
The AI strategy was a stated ambition with a timetable
The September 10, 2024 strategy article argued that agents would become major consumers of blockchain capacity. It proposed infrastructure, interfaces, wallets and financial services that could automate tasks for people and eventually for other agents. The article included a twelve-month roadmap and a strong prediction about agent activity by 2026. Those statements establish the team’s intended direction, not proof that every scheduled product shipped or that the prediction became true.
They also distinguish Mode’s official vision from an investor’s claim that MODE must appreciate if artificial intelligence becomes popular. A successful application still needs a demonstrated relationship to the network’s costs, governance and token economy before that broader technological trend has a specific economic implication.
A natural-language interface still produces a concrete transaction
The AI Terminal documentation describes a system that interprets a prompt, chooses tools and prepares an onchain action for the user to confirm in a wallet. Its examples combine market information, forecasts and transaction-capable integrations. That workflow should be understood as an interface to existing permissions and contracts, not as a replacement for them. The documentation itself calls the technology experimental and advises checking the proposed transaction. A fluent explanation cannot establish that an approval amount, destination or leveraged position matches the user’s intent.
The useful accessibility goal is to make those actions easier to understand while preserving review, rather than to make a signature feel unnecessary because the request began in ordinary language.
The current trading guide separates configuration from execution
The trading-agent guide places each agent in a separate funded sub-account and lets the user choose a model, execution mode, indicators and leverage constraints. It describes logging the agent’s reasoning and allowing the user to pause or delete the agent. An important qualification appears in the stopping behavior: preventing new positions does not necessarily close positions already open. That distinction matters more than a general promise of hands-free trading.
The guide also contains inconsistent wording about whether an agent selects one asset or several, so that detail should be checked in the actual product rather than presented as a settled capability. The documented interface is an operational description, not an independent record of reliable investment performance.
The separate risk notice says that the generated API key permits trading but not withdrawals. It also warns that execution varies with timing, liquidity and slippage and that automated strategies can lose the entire investment assigned to them. Restricting withdrawals reduces one class of authority; it does not prevent an authorized trading system from making a costly decision or incurring losses within its account. The notice’s position and order limits are product rules rather than guarantees of capital preservation. These distinctions keep the AI narrative proportionate.
Automation can make a strategy more consistent, but consistently executing a poor strategy does not make it profitable, and another user’s reported results may not match the same configuration’s later execution.
The agent announcement reported tests rather than guaranteed returns
The October 9, 2025 launch article introduced breakout and trend strategies and compared their backtests with buying and holding. Its examples specified selected markets, leverage and assumed trading costs. The article also placed broader verifiability standards among future work. A historical simulation can clarify the strategy the team wants to build, but it is not the same as independently audited live performance or proof that every decision is currently verifiable onchain. Market selection, costs and the test period affect the comparison.
The article is therefore useful evidence of the product’s launch and official investment thesis, while its stronger performance language should remain a claim to evaluate against subsequent live results and disclosed methodology.
An application configuration error required a privileged rescue
Ether.fi’s incident record says that withdrawal-proof generation failed on May 8, 2024 because its contracts had been initialized with the wrong messenger address. The funds were stuck rather than reported stolen. After examining a remedy and consulting Nethermind, the teams used an August 1 recovery through Mode’s Portal contract. This was an integration failure with consequences at the bridge, not evidence that every Mode transaction was invalid. The incident illustrates why compatibility at the software-stack level does not eliminate deployment mistakes in applications that depend on it.
A contract can use a familiar bridge interface and still be configured with an address that prevents the intended cross-chain message from completing.
Mode’s own notice describes an upgrade to rescue 4,880 ETH and explains why the operation was not announced in advance. The team said it wanted to avoid interference with the sensitive proof and finalization process. That account demonstrates both the usefulness and the significance of privileged intervention. Emergency authority can make a recovery possible, while also showing that the system’s governing actors have powers beyond ordinary application execution.
The notice does not justify assuming every later mistaken transfer can be reversed or that an exchange must recover an unsupported deposit. Each case depends on custody, contract permissions and the precise failure. A successful exceptional rescue is not a universal user-protection mechanism.
The historical Optimism handover is not the current endpoint
Mode recorded a completed handover of mainnet keys to the Optimism Security Council on August 6, 2024 and linked the transaction. That is a dated administrative event, not an irrevocable property of the network. The accompanying security documentation describes joint multisignature approval and no upgrade delay, which explains why even that arrangement retained administrative trust. Keeping the date attached to the handover prevents it from becoming a timeless claim that Optimism must always govern Mode.
Governance relationships can change without changing the chain identifier or every user-facing application. Readers therefore need a subsequent ownership record when deciding who currently has authority to alter the bridge and other core contracts.
The September 2, 2026 Optimism proposal requested the return of Mode, Metal, Zora and Dust administrative ownership to Conduit. It explained that monitoring and upgrade support for the affected chains would end after notice and that the chains could use their own Superchain configuration. The proposal distinguished the transfer of authority from changes to protocol behavior. That distinction should not make authority seem irrelevant: the identity of the parties permitted to upgrade or pause contracts is part of a user’s trust model.
The next paragraph records the subsequent contract-state check.
A September 30 read of Mode’s Ethereum ProxyAdmin and DisputeGameFactory returned the Conduit multisignature as owner. The same read returned a four-signature threshold for that Safe. This directly corroborates the ownership change, while making no claim to have audited the people controlling each signing key or every delegated module. The observation also resolves a material conflict with the older documentation’s administrative description. The observation is tied to the recorded Ethereum block; later transfers would require another check.
Available data does not make the current proof path permissionless
The reviewed L2BEAT configuration records Ethereum blob or calldata availability, restricted state proposers and challengers, and a dispute game whose placeholder prestate prevents execution-based resolution. It therefore warns that the deployed proof contracts do not currently provide the functional guarantee their presence might imply. It also records immediate upgrades, forced inclusion after a delay and withdrawal dependence on the permitted proposer. These properties must be considered together.
Publishing data enables reconstruction, but does not by itself ensure that the bridge rejects an invalid claim. Likewise, forcing a transaction into the chain does not necessarily complete a withdrawal if the required state proposal is unavailable. The current limitations are more informative than an unqualified assertion that Mode inherits all of Ethereum’s security.
A canonical withdrawal has several distinct stages
The bridge guide distinguishes initiating a withdrawal on Mode, proving it on Ethereum and finalizing it after the challenge period. It specifically says that the waiting period starts after the proof step, rather than when a user first requests the transfer. Ethereum transactions also require fees on Ethereum. This explains a common difference between a wallet showing a withdrawal request and funds becoming spendable on the destination network. Faster third-party routes can make a different liquidity arrangement, but should not be confused with completion of that canonical process.
The guide explains the intended workflow; current contract permissions, disputes and operational failures can still affect whether a particular withdrawal progresses as expected.
