Canto
A public goods experiment with a token-funded commons
Canto is a Cosmos SDK network with an Ethereum-compatible execution environment and native CANTO fees and staking. Its distinctive experiment combined a fee-free exchange, lending infrastructure and the NOTE unit of account with incentives for users and developers. The technical history includes changing expansion plans, security reviews and disputes about who benefits from a supposedly public commons.

The network behind the public goods argument
Canto is a separate blockchain, not another name for Canton or a token deployed on Ethereum. Its registry identifies the Cosmos chain as canto_7700-1 and the base staking and fee denomination as acanto. Ethereum-style wallets encounter chain ID 7700. Those identities explain why a familiar wallet interface can still involve different validators, balances and transaction history. Ethereum compatibility supplies a software interface; it does not turn Canto transactions into Ethereum-settled transactions.
The connecting guide separates mainnet 7700 from testnet 7701. A network entry in a wallet is a connection to an RPC service, not a guarantee that the service is current, honest or available. For readers revisiting old applications, checking the actual network identifier matters more than recognizing a token logo. A successful connection also says nothing by itself about the depth of a lending market or a bridge's ability to honor withdrawals.
Origins and the investor who bought the public goods thesis
The archived mainnet genesis file carries a July 26, 2022 timestamp. This is a configuration date, not a claim that public trading began that day. Keeping those events separate prevents a common historical shortcut: treating a genesis timestamp, a public launch and the first exchange listing as interchangeable. The file establishes a concrete starting state for the network that later attracted attention for its economic design.
In January 2023, Jesse Walden, Spencer Noon and Derek Walkush described Variant's investment as an experiment in economic incentives. They explicitly disclosed that the firm had acquired a position. Their argument was that subsidized shared infrastructure could help applications develop before extracting fees from users. This is useful primary evidence of an investor thesis, including the investor's interest in its success. It is not independent proof that public infrastructure spending necessarily creates lasting token demand.
Variant also treated contract revenue sharing as a proposal at that time. Later documentation describes an implemented module. Reading the two records chronologically avoids placing finished features into an earlier period. The appeal was a different starting arrangement for developers, not a technological claim that established every application would succeed. The analogy to publicly financed roads belonged to the investors' argument and should be assessed as an analogy, rather than a measured economic result.
What was supposed to be free
Free Public Infrastructure was a specific design position: basic exchange, lending and accounting services should not each acquire a separate governance token whose holders could charge future users. Canto's documentation gives those components different control arrangements. The exchange is described as immutable, while the lending market is governed through network staking. Calling the entire system ungoverned would therefore be inaccurate. The commons still has parameters, funding decisions and people with influence over them.
The original DEX uses liquidity pools and automated pricing. Its documentation describes both constant-product pools and a different curve for closely priced assets. It also says that the exchange cannot be upgraded to introduce protocol fees. That constraint concerns this exchange's contracts, not every website or application on Canto. Users still need gas, available liquidity and a usable interface, and an absence of swap fees does not remove the economic risks of providing inventory to traders.
Lending and the dollar aspiration of NOTE
The Canto Lending Market derives from Compound v2 and allows assets, including supported liquidity-provider tokens, to participate in pooled lending. Depositing an LP position into a second protocol layers another dependency onto the original pool. The convenience is that the same economic position can support additional activity. The tradeoff is that pricing, collateral eligibility and liquidation rules now matter alongside the exchange itself. A token's presence in a pool should not be mistaken for an unconditional right to borrow against it.
NOTE is documented as an overcollateralized unit of account rather than an independently redeemable bank dollar. Its Accountant mechanism adjusts borrowing conditions using a time-weighted price, with the stated aim of bringing its market price toward one dollar. The design changes incentives when price moves away from the target; it cannot command every outside buyer to transact at that target. Understanding this distinction is essential before calling NOTE stable in an absolute sense.
The neofinance documentation later placed tokenized Treasury assets at the center of the NOTE system and described cNOTE as a deposit receipt. It also described governance-funded incentives for downstream lending. These are different claims from saying that CANTO itself is Treasury-backed or that every holder directly owns government securities. Following the sequence of collateral, borrowing and deposit receipts shows where an asset changes form and where additional protocol or issuer dependencies enter.
How a contract could earn revenue
Contract Secured Revenue introduced an explicit alternative to issuing an application token. The documented module allocates a governed share of gas fees to registered contracts and represents the claim through a transferable NFT. The initial share described for proposal 41 was twenty percent. This is a historical parameter, not a current revenue forecast. A developer still needs genuine transaction activity before a percentage of fees produces meaningful income.
Registration has technical consequences. The Turnstile process must connect the actual contract to the revenue claim; creating an NFT from an externally owned account alone does not make unrelated contracts generate payments. That detail distinguishes an implementable mechanism from the loose slogan that builders automatically earn on every transaction. Transferring the claim also transfers an economic right, which may differ from ownership of the application's code, domain or administrative keys.
Application Specific Dollar is another attempt to fund applications through financial design. The documented contract takes NOTE deposits and directs lending yield to the token deployer. Version two adds LayerZero-based movement across supported networks. Users therefore need to distinguish holding the application token from receiving its underlying yield. One-to-one backing in NOTE describes the accounting unit; it does not transform NOTE into a guaranteed dollar or erase the bridge and lending dependencies.
Allocation, voting and the meaning of fairness
Canto's token economics page records a billion-token genesis allocation, with 130 million assigned to initial contributors and 20 million to settlers. Those numbers made contributors thirteen percent of the total genesis allocation but roughly eighty-seven percent of the initially circulating 150 million. Both percentages can be arithmetically correct while conveying very different impressions. A fair explanation names the denominator instead of selecting whichever percentage flatters the preferred narrative.
The same document reserved substantial allocations for liquidity incentives and future public goods and described additional declining inflation. A genesis allocation is therefore not a promise that circulating supply stays fixed or that rewards are free to existing holders. Network incentives need to be evaluated alongside distribution and dilution. Old annualized reward figures in the documentation should be read as historical settings, not an offer available to a reader today.
Governance connects the Cosmos and EVM sides through the govshuttle module. A passed network proposal can convey instructions that the relevant EVM application reads and executes. This is why a vote, its message handling and the final contract state are separate pieces of evidence. The lending protocol documentation traces that route into its adapted governance machinery. Token-weighted participation creates a way to make decisions; it does not establish equal influence among every user.
Interoperability is a collection of routes
Canto's bridge guide distinguishes Gravity Bridge, LayerZero and IBC routes and also lists third-party services. These systems do not share one universal trust model merely because they lead to the same wallet. A bridged asset has a route and a representation as well as a ticker. Someone checking an old balance needs to identify that representation and the corresponding withdrawal path, rather than assume every similarly named token can leave through any available bridge.
Union's March 2024 partnership announcement described planned message passing and additional asset routes. It quoted Anon762549 of the Canto Growth Collective and Union cofounder Karel Kubat on the hoped-for liquidity and interoperability benefits. The announcement also said engineering teams would collaborate in the following weeks. It establishes the partnership and its intentions; it does not independently prove that all named integrations subsequently operated in production.
Polygon's November 2023 CDK guide included Canto among projects building or committed to the toolkit. That is evidence of a period in which a different architectural direction was being discussed. It is not sufficient evidence that the existing chain became an Ethereum rollup. A network history should preserve an announced ambition while requiring separate deployment records before changing its settlement and security classification.
Security review and release history
A July 2022 review by Ghoul.sol examined selected changes after earlier audits. It reported three high-severity issues and one medium issue as mitigated, while acknowledging an informational concern about treating stablecoin prices as fixed. The narrow scope is important: the review was not a warranty over the entire future chain. Its value is the inspectable discussion of pricing and reserve calculations, including what was changed and what remained an accepted assumption.
The August 2024 Code4rena report examined another version of the system and documented four medium-severity findings. One concerned missing message-server registration that could prevent successful governance decisions from executing. Another concerned incompatible legacy signing names. These are concrete reminders that a vote's political legitimacy and a program's execution path are different questions. The report's sponsor responses discuss fixes, but a reader should still connect a mitigation claim to the deployed version being assessed.
The September 2023 v7.0.0 release introduced onboarding middleware and removed unused modules. The September 2024 v8.1.3 release records a transaction-receipt consistency fix involving a different chain ID. Release pages establish what maintainers published, with exact dates and change links. They do not, by themselves, prove when every validator installed the software or that every public RPC endpoint remained available afterward.
Belonging, skepticism and everyday use
Canto's public identity was contested within Cosmos communities. In a March 2023 discussion, jekpopulous2 defended its EVM developer appeal, MaximumStudent1839 questioned treating every EVM-oriented network as the same cultural project, and Cactus-Steve asked whether liquidity incentives were sustainable. These are named positions from a particular conversation. They show competing criteria for belonging and usefulness without establishing what all Cosmos users believed or validating promotional adoption statistics.
A separate allocation discussion involved DetroitMM12 questioning contributor incentives, while jekpopulous2 defended paying the people who built the public infrastructure. The disagreement was about how to reconcile a shared commons with concentrated early ownership. It should not be converted into an allegation of misconduct. The record is valuable precisely because participants could agree that infrastructure mattered while disagreeing about distribution and accountability.
How to read the surviving record
The registry still classified Canto as live when reviewed, but an entry in a registry is not a real-time service-level check. This account does not infer a current shutdown from an unavailable RPC endpoint, nor promise uninterrupted operation because documentation remains online. The distinction matters for small networks whose software, interfaces, validator services and historical records may have very different maintenance schedules.
The contract-address reference distinguishes native CANTO from its wrapped contract representation and from NOTE. Keeping that distinction visible prevents a database or wallet ticker match from rewriting the network's economics. For historical comparison, the enduring questions are concrete: which service charges users, who funds incentives, which decisions are changeable, and which claims actually have an executable contract behind them.
