Distinguish an app password from the method that restores control of an account.
Imagine your phone stops working tomorrow. What restores access, and who else could use it?
- Unlock this device?
- Restore this account?
- Who could do either?
Two very different locks
For a conventional seed-based wallet, the device password unlocks that installation. The recovery phrase restores the keys. Someone who obtains the phrase can control its accounts without your device password. Some wallets use different recovery designs, so read the instructions for the exact account type you create.
Plan for loss as well as theft
Keep recovery material private and make a backup plan that survives losing one device. A hardware wallet changes how keys are stored and signatures are produced; it still needs the correct recovery arrangements. If a service holds the keys, account recovery and withdrawals also depend on that service.
Write the plan, never the secret here
Write only descriptions such as 'offline backup location'. Do not enter a real key or recovery phrase in this site, a chat or this exercise.
- Identify your wallet's documented recovery method.
- Write who would have physical or account access to the backup.
- Decide how you would find the official recovery instructions after losing your device.
A usable recovery plan is private, understandable and specific to the wallet.
Protect the way back in before putting anything valuable inside.
