Nolus
An appchain's lending rules now reach into Solana markets.
Nolus is a Cosmos SDK and CosmWasm chain supporting asset-backed margin positions. NLS is its native staking and governance token. By the September 30, 2026 review, official documentation described Solray's production deployment on Solana and the September closure of Nolus's Osmosis money market. The chain, the remote trading product and the token therefore need separate explanations.

The chain survives a change in its market
Nolus began as an application-specific chain rather than simply a lending contract on Osmosis. Its May 23, 2023 launch announcement named genesis validators and described staking, stablecoin supply and borrowing as different participant roles. Trading integration was described as following genesis, so the chain's launch date should not be used as the activation date of every financial feature. The original design sought to combine a borrower's contribution with borrowed capital to purchase the position's asset, keeping that asset within the protocol until its obligations were settled.
Current developer documentation still identifies a Cosmos SDK chain using CometBFT, with the nolusd binary built from the project's own repository. An independent public RPC check on September 30 returned a recent block on pirin-1 and reported that the node was not catching up. This is a bounded observation of a responding node, not a guarantee of all validators or services. It matters because moving the product's trading activity to another chain does not, by itself, establish that the Nolus ledger has shut down.
A lease is a controlled position
The protocol overview uses lease for a position that combines the user's contribution and an LPP loan to acquire the asset being held. Each position has a CosmWasm contract that tracks its obligations and lifecycle. The user's exposure therefore differs from an unrestricted loan transferred to an ordinary wallet. The protocol controls how the acquired position assets are handled until settlement. It supports long and short arrangements through its borrowing and target currencies; calling it spot margin does not mean leverage or liquidation risk has vanished.
The opening specification separates contract creation, borrowing, remote-account setup and the final swap. A factory validates the position and its configuration, while the lending pool checks that the requesting contract is legitimate. Cross-chain setup requires acknowledgments before subsequent steps proceed. This explains why a submitted transaction is not necessarily an already opened trade: several dependent operations must succeed.
The specification includes historical Cosmos account paths as well as Solana accounts, so a described code path should not be mistaken for a currently offered Cosmos market.
A fixed rate can still produce a changing cost
The quoting endpoint previews a borrow using current pool conditions. Its documentation warns that the quoted terms may change before the position opens because utilization changes. Once a position is established, a fixed annual rate makes one part of the carrying cost predictable; it does not freeze the amount of interest accumulated through time or the value of the collateral. A useful reading of a quote separates borrowed principal, total exposure and the lender and protocol portions of interest instead of treating one headline percentage as the complete trade.
The team's September 2026 comparison with other Solana products used a particular trade and a September 17 rate snapshot. It explicitly acknowledged that its example cost more to hold and left common swap costs out of the comparison table. That admission is more informative than repeating a claim that one venue is always cheaper. The result depended on leverage, holding period, execution and adverse price moves. It is a provider-authored illustration, not an independent ranking or a current offer to every borrower.
A receipt represents exposure to a lending pool
Depositors receive nLPN receipts representing a share of a particular lending pool. The documented accounting uses an exchange index between the receipt and the pool's lending currency; withdrawals reduce receipt balances and return the corresponding assets. Interest paid by borrowers is part of that accounting. A rising receipt index is different from a promise of immediately available cash under every condition. It also should not be confused with NLS staking rewards: the receipt represents a lending position, while the native token serves separate chain functions.
The 2024 comparison with perpetual products acknowledged a specific lender risk: a fast price fall can leave sold collateral worth less than the debt if liquidation is too late. It described a reserve intended to cover shortfalls. That is a backstop mechanism with assets and rules, not insurance against an unlimited loss. The same article stressed slippage as a material borrowing cost. These admissions help a reader evaluate later claims of safe leverage without adopting the promotional conclusion that the design is automatically preferable to every alternative.
The oracle is an institution as well as an algorithm
The oracle combines an on-chain contract with off-chain price feeders. The current guide describes governance-approved feeders, signed spot observations and a moving average consumed by position contracts. Governance can configure supported pairs. This means price formation depends on selected data inputs and operators as well as deterministic contract code. Smoothing can reduce sensitivity to a momentary observation, but it does not make an incorrect source correct.
An assessment needs to ask who supplies prices, which assets and routes they cover, and how the system handles stale or inconsistent observations.
The September 2023 incident gives that question a concrete history. Nolus's postmortem says a price-feed change incorrectly interpreted an inverse price returned by a different Osmosis module, causing premature liquidations across 86 wallets on September 8. The team acknowledged that it had assumed equivalent behavior without further testing. It reverted the feed and announced stronger validation and cross-checks.
This is the team's technical account of a real failure, not evidence that later controls eliminated every possible oracle problem or that every separate reimbursement dispute was resolved.
Protection changes the process, not the existence of losses
The risk specification describes sales when interest is overdue or the position's liability exceeds its permitted level. Partial liquidation aims to restore health while leaving a smaller position; a full sale remains possible. Market Anomaly Guard checks simulated proceeds against an oracle-based reference before an execution. The guide also describes asset-specific exposure limits and temporarily disabling new positions when liquidity is insufficient. These are risk controls with parameters and dependencies.
They cannot justify treating every loan as immune to market gaps, failed execution or deficient collateral.
The user-facing liquidation guide adds an operational qualification: a held liquidation can remain paused until the Nolus team resumes it. It also warns that the displayed nearest liquidation price excludes future interest accrual and liquidation slippage. A reader therefore should not treat a line on a chart as a fixed contractual floor or assume every pause resolves solely through an autonomous market signal. The technical and help-center descriptions need to be read together, with the operator's role visible rather than hidden behind a broad claim of automatic protection.
Stakers govern, but not every control is the same
The governance guide says voting power follows staked NLS. A delegator can cast a vote overriding the validator's vote for that stake. Merely holding the transferred NLS representation on Solana is insufficient; the token must be brought into a Nolus account and staked. That distinction prevents a misleading equivalence between trading liquidity and political participation. It also makes the social mechanism concrete: the people supplying market liquidity, borrowers and token holders need not have identical influence over a parameter change or a treasury decision.
The architecture guide describes an Admin contract coordinating migrations across registered contracts through chain-governance sudo messages. It separately identifies an operational registry administrator. The document says the registry itself does not hold user funds, but changing which contracts participate is still an important control surface. These Nolus-side permissions should not be casually extended to the Solana program, which has its own deployment mechanism.
Describing a system as governed requires identifying the exact action and chain, not assuming one voting process covers every component.
Remote execution introduced another deployment boundary
The November 2025 Solray announcement proposed carrying IBC verification and messaging into a Solana program and adapting a relayer for that purpose. Its disclosure said the implementation remained under development and closed source at publication. The August 2026 changelog then reported end-to-end work while explicitly saying a new money-market generation was built and tested but not yet live. These were meaningful development milestones, but neither document alone established the final deployment state.
A chronology has to preserve those qualifications instead of retroactively treating a roadmap as a launch.
By this review, the dedicated Solray reference listed a production program, ProgramData account, transfer and remote-lease channels, escrows and a mirror NLS mint. It explains that the program uses Solana's upgradeable loader and that its ProgramData account records the upgrade authority. This is a concrete deployment reference, not an assertion that the program is immutable or inherits only the Nolus voting model. It also distinguishes assets held in Solana accounts from the position contract governing them on Nolus. The two chains remain separate security and execution environments.
Old Cosmos instructions are now historical
The official troubleshooting guide says the Nolus x Osmosis money market closed on September 6, 2026. It reports that remaining positions were wound down and funds returned to Nolus accounts, and that no active Cosmos markets remain. Legacy Keplr accounts and Solana-connected sessions are distinct accounts, so reconnecting a different wallet does not reveal the same balances. The guide's explanation of the closure is the team's account. This reading does not independently certify each settlement or repeat older Cosmos trading instructions as current functionality.
The January 2025 retrospective is useful for understanding what preceded that closure. It describes fee abstraction, the addition of volatile lending currencies for shorts and an expansion from Osmosis to Neutron's Astroport. These are historical product changes, not evidence of active support after September 2026. The retrospective also discussed buybacks and a revised emissions curve. Dating those statements is essential because the market migration changed the operating context, and current documentation has a materially different description of automatic token revenue activity.
NLS utility is not a promise of perpetual buybacks
The current NLS guide describes native fees, staking and governance, with fee abstraction accepting other supported assets. It explicitly says no buyback runs automatically today and explains that tokens acquired through past buybacks are held in a reserve subject to governance allocation. This supersedes the assumption that every new trade mechanically burns NLS under an unchanging rule. A token thesis must distinguish network use, treasury policy, actual distributions and demand in external markets. None alone establishes the future price or a holder's entitlement to fixed income.
In December 2025, tonyler_ argued that expanding into Solana could bring value back to the Cosmos token rather than abandoning the appchain. That was an attributed interpretation of a developing strategy. In a later Solana post, the same author identified themself as Nolus's community lead and emphasized that deployment alone had not brought meaningful adoption results. The two records show both a promotional investment thesis and an operational recognition that users' trust must be earned. They should not be presented as independent community-wide endorsement.
Audits, user objections and the limits of reassurance
Oak Security's early money-market audit identified the precise repository commit it reviewed and documented resolved critical findings alongside an acknowledged issue involving Neutron messages. Its scope was a particular collection of contracts, not every later deployment or the subsequent Solana program. The report expressly limited its coverage. Its value is the detailed finding-and-resolution record, which can be compared with code changes. Using its logo as proof that an evolving protocol cannot lose funds would remove the very boundaries that make the audit useful.
The current security page lists published reports and a reporting policy spanning chain, contracts, Solray and the web application. It asks for reproducible findings tied to versions or addresses and distinguishes a report from speculative claims.
User conversations provide a different kind of evidence: objections about leverage, advertised yield and disputed liquidations. Those comments do not establish a vulnerability by themselves. Their proper role is to identify questions a careful reader should bring to contracts, transaction records and incident reports, with disagreement preserved rather than dismissed as disloyalty.
