Sources and further reading

A provider listing establishes how the asset is catalogued; it does not independently verify project claims or endorse the asset.

The token and the underlying asset

Paxos describes PAXG as tokenized allocated gold held in professional vaults. The token can move through supported blockchain infrastructure, while custody of the metal and the legal arrangements remain off-chain. This creates two records to understand: the on-chain token balance and the issuer's record of the holder's claim on gold. It is different from a cryptocurrency whose value arises without a claim on a separately stored physical asset.

What ownership verification involves

The issuer provides product documents and tools for examining gold allocation associated with supported on-chain holdings. A holder using an exchange may instead have a contractual claim against that exchange, which adds another custody relationship. ERC-20 compatibility describes how a token can expose transfers and balances on Ethereum; it does not establish that the corresponding bars exist. Allocation information, reserve reporting, legal terms, and the smart contract answer different questions.

Gold exposure is not dollar stability

If gold rises or falls in dollar terms, a gold-linked token is expected to reflect that movement rather than remain at one dollar. Market spreads, fees, eligibility checks, minimum redemption amounts, and settlement arrangements can affect conversion into metal or cash. As an illustrative distinction, owning half a token need not mean a vault will ship half an ounce on demand. Check the issuer's current redemption conditions and distinguish a reserve attestation from a guarantee against every operational or legal risk.
