A crypto asset designed to track a reference value, such as a currency; its market price can still move away from that target.

영어 원문 읽기 →Stablecoins use different arrangements to pursue price stability. Some rely on an issuer and off-chain reserves; others use crypto collateral, liquidation rules, or mechanisms that adjust incentives and supply. The reference asset is not necessarily the U.S. dollar. Start by identifying the target, how units are created and redeemed, and who can use that process. Ethereum.org's overview distinguishes these designs. Their shared label describes an objective, so it should not erase important differences in collateral, governance, liquidity, or the assumptions required for the mechanism to work.
For an issuer-backed example, Circle publishes information about USDC reserves and links supporting reports. Circle describes reserves involving cash and short-dated U.S. government assets, including holdings through its reserve fund. That is an issuer disclosure to examine, not a conclusion that every stablecoin has equivalent backing. Check the report date, assets covered, entity responsible, and what the external accountant actually examined. Then distinguish the reserve arrangement from the separate terms determining whether a particular holder can redeem directly with the issuer.
Circle's USDC risk disclosure expressly allows for prices above or below the target on third-party platforms and describes eligibility conditions on direct redemption. It also describes address blocking, operational interruptions, and the absence of deposit insurance for USDC holdings. These features explain why holding a transferable token and having immediate access to a bank deposit are different arrangements.
When researching any stablecoin, connect the on-chain contract to the correct issuer and network, examine the redemption terms, and report the design's actual limits instead of treating the word stable as a guarantee.
