Arbitrum Nova
Social-token experimentation, AnyTrust economics and a move into maintenance.
Arbitrum Nova is a distinct Ethereum scaling network whose original consumer focus relied on AnyTrust data availability. In September 2026 the Foundation reported its transition into a minimized maintenance state, following a migration period toward Arbitrum One.

A separate chain with a changing purpose
Arbitrum Nova has its own ledger, balances and network identifier: chain 42170. Arbitrum One uses 42161. Both use ETH for gas, but an ETH balance on one does not automatically pay a transaction on the other. That distinction also matters for tokens with matching names and for wallet interfaces that display an address without its network. Nova is therefore a separate network account in this encyclopedia. It is neither another edition of the ARB asset nor a synonym for every application built with Arbitrum software.
Offchain Labs opened Nova to all users and developers on August 9, 2022, after a developer launch period. Its announcement emphasized games, social applications and frequent inexpensive interactions, while describing Arbitrum One as the companion environment for DeFi and NFTs. Reddit Community Points was a central launch example. This was a product hypothesis about where very cheap execution would matter most.
A game creating small items and a social forum rewarding contributions might need many low-value transactions, making the cost of each operation more important than the size of a single financial position.
What AnyTrust changed
The Nitro paper describes AnyTrust as a variant that replaces routine publication of full transaction data on Ethereum with a committee's availability certificate. In the stated model, at least two of N members must be honest. A certificate signed by N minus one members therefore includes at least one honest signer willing to supply the data. This is a specific assumption about access to transaction data, not a claim that any two people can reverse the ledger. The certificate commits to data and its availability conditions; it does not make the underlying transactions disappear.
Nitro nodes still need the transaction data to reproduce execution. The implementation explanation describes two accepted inputs: full data posted to Ethereum, or a certificate pointing to data supplied through the committee. If the sequencer cannot obtain enough signatures, the system can fall back to posting the full data. That fallback changes operating costs. It should not be confused with proof that unavailable historical data can always be reconstructed after an assumption has already failed.
Reading the availability path separately from the execution rules makes the original Nova tradeoff much easier to understand.
Security was an engineering process
Trail of Bits' 2022 Nitro assessment included a partial review of the AnyTrust differences, including certificate validation. Its findings covered message parsing, data-availability message handling and certificate expiration, among other areas. The report also expressly limits its scope and time. It is useful evidence that these surfaces received technical scrutiny, rather than a seal that every later version is safe. A reader investigating a particular deployment would still need the reviewed commit, remediation record and subsequent changes.
Neither a committee's recognizable member names nor an audit title substitutes for that version-specific work.
The November 2023 ArbOS 11 proposal shows why seemingly small accounting details mattered to Nova. Retryable transactions had directed fees differently from ordinary transactions, bypassing an infrastructure account that paid committee members. The proposal also corrected a displayed chain-owner list without changing who could actually exercise ownership. Those are different kinds of bug: one concerns economic routing and another concerns what an observer sees. Treating both as a change in governance control would misread the record.
Compatibility upgrades also needed coordinated activation rather than assuming that Ethereum's latest opcode was already enabled.
A bridge transfer is more than a wallet confirmation
The parent-to-child messaging documentation separates submitting a retryable ticket from executing its destination call. Automatic execution can fail because the supplied gas conditions are insufficient, leaving an opportunity for manual redemption. Tickets have a lifetime that can be extended; expiration and refund behavior depend on the configured refund address. This explains why a successful Ethereum receipt alone may not mean the intended Nova application action has finished.
For example, submitting a deposit and completing the destination contract call are related steps, but they are not one indivisible wallet screen.
The canonical bridge guide describes a withdrawal from Nova to Ethereum as a process with at least a seven-day waiting period, followed by a claim. There are transactions and gas requirements on the relevant networks. A fast third-party route is a different service, with its own liquidity and operational assumptions. The practical distinction is between a pending protocol withdrawal and an exchange or liquidity provider advancing funds sooner.
A small Nova transfer fee does not erase Ethereum claim costs, and an old bridge tutorial should not be mistaken for confirmation that its quoted route is still available.
Small acts of participation
jwinterm's MOON2gas testing post documents a particularly tangible community response: a bot dispensing small amounts of gas through Reddit comments. Eligibility depended on account age and holding an earned community token, with limits on repeated requests. Its creator discussed crashes, rate limits and improvements in public. The ritual of typing a faucet command was both a utility and a way to help newcomers take their first transaction. This is historical evidence of volunteer maintenance. It is not a promise that the bot, its payouts or its eligibility rules remain active today.
In August 2023, ASingleGuitarString asked whether linking Donuts to the Reddit Vault ecosystem might stimulate r/ethtrader activity. The author explicitly distinguished the poll from an actual migration vote. Replies debated audience differences and whether token incentives would bring unwanted farming. This is valuable counterevidence to the idea that every social community wanted the same integration. A shared ledger can reduce some technical distance while leaving disagreement about moderation, status and what counts as a worthwhile contribution.
Network choice does not resolve those community preferences.
When the platform withdrew support
The October 2023 discussion after Reddit's announcement recorded conflicting reactions rather than one unified holder response. Ethan0307 expressed determination to keep holding, while 20seh hoped that reduced token incentives would improve the quality of discussion. Other participants debated rebuilding outside Reddit. These comments establish a moment of disappointment, loyalty and disagreement. They cannot establish whether continuing to hold was financially sound or whether the forum would have been healthier without rewards.
The episode also separates the existence of tokens on a ledger from continued support by the platform that first distributed them.
A March 2024 guide by GabeSter explained the community's later Nova-to-One liquidity bridge in terms of pools on the two networks. It discussed demand-dependent fee income and third-party risk, while replies raised practical questions about liquidity availability. This was a different route from the canonical delayed withdrawal. The history illustrates how a community can develop transfer infrastructure after an original sponsor retreats. It also shows why describing two token representations as simply interchangeable hides work done by liquidity providers.
A guide's historical incentive figures are not evidence of present yield or guaranteed redemption capacity.
Governance operated across networks
The governance implementation overview locates ordinary DAO proposals and voting on Arbitrum One, with messages passing through Ethereum before reaching Nova's upgrade executor. The Security Council has exceptional powers, including an emergency path that does not follow the ordinary delay sequence. Nova users therefore did not constitute a separate token electorate for every protocol decision. This architecture creates several questions to keep separate: who votes, which contract owns an upgrade permission, who can execute an approved message, and who can act urgently.
A public vote alone is not a full inventory of operational authority.
The April 2024 fee-router proposal addressed a specific administrative problem: collecting Nova revenue at an address that required constitutional governance action to move it. The proposed routers would send proceeds through Ethereum to the DAO treasury on One using permissionless calls. That is treasury plumbing, not an automatic distribution to everyone holding ARB or using Nova. Delegate support focused on easier accounting and fewer repetitive votes.
The source contains both the proposal and implementation links; the date of the forum post should not be substituted for the date a particular contract action executed.
The cheap-chain advantage narrowed
The May 2025 cost-cap proposal argued that Ethereum blobs and more customizable Arbitrum chains had weakened Nova's original cost advantage. It proposed allowing batch posters to recover their full posting costs instead of leaving a subsidized shortfall. cp0x supported ending the subsidy; Chris_Areta asked for a clearer account of Nova's future. These were governance judgments about costs and priorities, not proof that low fees are intrinsically undesirable. The proposal's comparisons are historical estimates.
They should not be carried forward as today's measured fee ratio or used as a token-price forecast.
The May 2026 minimization proposal went further. Its authors argued that Nova had validated the AnyTrust model but no longer justified its previous operational footprint. The planned passive-committee configuration would post transaction data to Ethereum blobs while leaving committee membership dormant onchain. It also proposed lighter sequencer and validator infrastructure and reduced provider contracts. This was deliberately maintenance rather than full deletion. A network can continue to exist while its support, capacity and strategic importance shrink.
The proposal warned that assertion timing and service quality could change even though the challenge period itself would remain unchanged.
The network after minimization
The Foundation's June FAQ confirms an approved migration window from June 4 to September 2, 2026. It warns that later support and third-party routes may be more limited while the canonical bridge remains accessible. It separately gives MOON holders a route through Ethereum rather than promising a universal direct Nova-to-One transfer. Developers must still update frontends, integrations and liquidity arrangements. Similar contract bytecode does not relocate users or application state by itself.
Remaining on Nova therefore involves practical service dependencies that cannot be evaluated solely from an old description of the virtual machine.
A September 14 Foundation governance report says phase three had commenced and Nova had entered its minimized state. That is stronger evidence of progression than the earlier proposed timetable, but it is not a fresh independent measurement of every RPC or contract. The report places the change among ongoing ecosystem operations, making clear that reducing Nova did not mean shutting down all of Arbitrum. This account therefore preserves Nova as a distinct historical and maintenance network.
Its earlier role in consumer experimentation and its later consolidation are both necessary to understand what the name now represents.

Reddit made the chain visible
Reddit's original migration announcement explained that Community Points distributions and selected in-app spending would initially have their gas covered, while users would pay ETH for gifting and tipping. Vault-held Moons were migrated by the platform; tokens outside Vault required a separate bridge. That divided experience helps explain why some users encountered blockchain mechanics only after they tried to move rewards. The post also documented application restrictions on transfers.
Those restrictions described Reddit's interface, not a general rule that Nova tokens could never be transferred through another compatible application.
The August 2022 Offchain Labs AMA exposed an onboarding tension almost immediately. Maxx3141 asked why inexperienced users needed to obtain ETH before they could use community tokens, including the inconvenience of the purchase process. Other questions focused on discovery, campaigns and whether more Reddit communities would join. These are original questions from participants, not a representative user survey. They nevertheless show that lowering execution fees did not automatically solve acquisition of gas, wallet education or distribution.
Nova's social adoption story involved the surrounding interface as much as the chain's throughput.
