Sony's current investment and delivered Startale applications support Soneium's corporate ecosystem.
The investment is in Startale, not a network token.

Soneium is an Ethereum rollup developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs with ETH as its gas asset. Its January 2025 mainnet launch linked creator applications with an explicit intellectual property enforcement policy. Community education, ASTR incentives and seasonal badges grew around it, while later rules narrowed access to the sequencer.

A Sony project without a Sony coin
Soneium belongs to the family of Ethereum scaling networks, rather than being a new version of Sony shares or the Astar ledger. The mainnet network information identifies chain ID 1868, Ethereum as its parent and ETH as its currency. Minato is a separate test environment connected to Sepolia. Those details matter when a wallet asks a newcomer to add the network: the same familiar address can hold different balances on different chains, and test funds are not mainnet purchasing power.
The September 2026 service terms explicitly say that the Foundation and related entities have not issued a native Soneium token. They describe a Foundation operated sequencer, transaction screening powers and substantial discretion over service parameters. A token deployed by an outside application therefore does not become an official Soneium investment merely because its contract runs here. Nor does using a wallet eliminate the service operator's influence over the usual transaction route.
The terms are evidence of the operator's stated relationship with users, not an independent ruling about regulatory classification.
Test first, then recruit applications
Minato opened publicly on August 28, 2024 alongside Soneium Spark. The combination connected technical testing with an incubation program: developers could experiment with contracts while applying for support to turn an idea into a product. Sony Block Solutions Labs brought together Sony and Startale, giving the project a route into entertainment businesses as well as crypto development. A testnet launch established a place to build; it did not establish that ordinary Sony customers were already using blockchain applications.
The November 2024 Spark selection announcement named 32 winning teams across several application categories. Its emphasis on mentoring, business development and introductions helps explain the ecosystem's early structure. Soneium was cultivating an application pipeline rather than waiting for a gas token to attract speculators. Selection remained an incubator decision, however. It was not a guarantee that every selected application would launch, maintain solvent contracts or communicate adequately with depositors.
Later community complaints about individual projects should be examined at that application level.
A mainnet built around creators and fans
The January 14, 2025 mainnet announcement placed creators, fans and intellectual property at the center of the network's purpose. It connected the chain with Sony related initiatives such as S.BLOX and tools for NFT marketing. This was a concrete public deployment, but the accompanying vision reached further than the deployment itself. A shared ledger can support access credentials, collectibles and payment flows; the existence of those mechanisms does not by itself demonstrate that artists earn more or that audiences prefer a blockchain experience.
Soneium's first quarter retrospective described badges, partnerships and growing application activity. Such retrospectives are useful evidence of what the operator chose to promote, particularly the effort to connect cultural brands with onchain participation. Their account and transaction figures should remain attributed project metrics. A wallet count does not identify a unique person, and repeated campaign transactions do not prove recurring consumer demand.
For this network, retention after a branded event is a more informative question than whether a launch campaign produced many transactions.
Execution, settlement and a second layer of assurances
The fee documentation separates execution on Soneium from the cost of publishing information to Ethereum. A simple interaction can therefore be affected by both local demand and conditions on the parent network. This explains why a low execution fee is not a promise of a fixed total cost. Applications that sponsor fees still need someone to pay those costs. A free looking game action can be an expense borne by its developer, rather than evidence that recording it onchain consumes no resources.
The April 2025 Fast Finality Layer announcement proposed another assurance mechanism using AltLayer's MACH and restaked assets through EigenLayer. Its faster confirmations address applications that dislike waiting for Ethereum settlement. That is a separate security arrangement, with its own participants and economic assumptions. A rapid signal from that layer should not be described as Ethereum itself reaching finality in a few seconds. The announcement also gives ASTR a prospective security role, which is different from making ASTR the mainnet gas asset.
What an address book can and cannot prove
Soneium publishes contract addresses for its bridge, portal, system configuration and administrative components. The list also distinguishes bridged assets and includes a permissioned dispute game. It is a practical starting point for checking whether an application is referring to the intended infrastructure. It is not, on its own, proof that every upgrade path is disabled or every participant can challenge a state assertion.
Readers assessing a bridge must examine the permissions attached to the current contracts, rather than treating Ethereum settlement as a complete description of operational trust.
The account abstraction documentation lists Alchemy Account Kit for Soneium and Minato, including embedded wallets, smart accounts and gas sponsorship. These tools help explain how an entertainment application can hide some of the usual wallet setup. They also relocate decisions: the application chooses its wallet integration, sponsorship rules and recovery experience. A smoother sign up can be useful without being equivalent to permissionless access through every provider. The documentation itself distinguishes confirmed integrations from tooling still being developed.
Intellectual property became a launch controversy
A day after mainnet launch, the team published its responsible innovation explanation. It defended restrictions on contracts associated with unauthorized branding, described the measures as reversible and said projects could appeal to a committee of core members. That is the project's justification for intervention, not a court judgment about each token. The disagreement exposed a real tension: a chain marketed to professional rights holders may enforce brand policies that traders accustomed to unrestricted token creation consider unacceptable.
The current restriction documentation describes a suspicious contract list, a grace period of roughly twelve hours and restrictions affecting RPC interaction and visibility. It also discusses malicious contract screening. These are different grounds for intervention and should not be collapsed into a claim that every listed project is fraudulent. For a user, practical access includes interfaces, wallets and RPC services as well as ledger rules. A contract can remain recorded on a blockchain while common tools refuse to make interacting with it easy.
Later access rules changed the practical picture
The notice updated in October 2025 says that mainnet write access to the sequencer is restricted to approved RPC providers from October 28. It expressly rules out permissionless write capable nodes and bypass relays, while allowing ordinary users to connect through approved public or private services. This later policy needs to accompany descriptions of the launch dispute. Repeating the January claim that users could simply choose another access route would leave readers without the subsequent restriction that governs the ordinary write path.
In its April 2025 Optimism delegate communication thread, Soneium named Startale representatives and described plans to publish voting rationales. That is an identifiable participation mechanism within the wider Optimism community. It is not evidence that Soneium users elect the sequencer operator or directly vote on contract restrictions. The distinction separates two kinds of governance often merged in promotional language: participating in a parent ecosystem's deliberations and holding authority over the service that accepts transactions on a particular network.
ASTR loyalty met Ethereum gas
The February 2025 ACS campaign used an Astar Foundation managed allocation of 100 million ASTR to encourage Soneium activity. It rewarded activity through points and application incentives over a specified campaign period. That arrangement connected existing Astar holders with a new Ethereum environment without turning the two networks into one ledger. It also helps explain why a Soneium discussion can be intensely concerned with ASTR demand. Campaign rewards are a distribution mechanism, not proof that the asset has become indispensable to every transaction.
In January 2025, forum contributor krm532 proposed treasury support for using ASTR instead of ETH. Replies exposed disagreement about the mechanism. you425 favored account abstraction rather than replacing the chain's currency, Maarten described work on such an approach, and VasaKing preferred attention to application adoption. The exchange is more informative than a claim that the community agreed on an ASTR gas switch. It shows holders arguing over how to connect token utility to actual wallet behavior, with implementation and funding still needing specific decisions.
The social work behind a network
Kai's January 2025 KYO thread argued that liquidity incentives and ASTR related pairs could introduce the asset to users beyond Polkadot. The post is an original builder's strategy for making a market, not an independent assessment that ASTR would become dominant on Soneium. Its credits and liquidity programs gave supporters something concrete to do. They also made the distinction between a durable trading venue and temporary reward seeking important: a campaign can attract deposits without creating lasting demand for the assets it subsidizes.
Juminstock's Colombia and Venezuela meetup proposal made cultural adoption tangible through local events, follow up channels and creator outreach. Replies asked how attendees would remain involved afterward. A March update supplied a report from Bogotá and plans for the next meetings. The thread also openly connected education with ASTR promotion. That mixture deserves clear attribution: organizers wanted a regional community and token participation, while the posts do not establish that all attendees shared an investment thesis or continued using applications after the events.
Teaching and application accountability
MR.NIK's April 2026 report described an unofficial Persian speaking Soneium community built around educational spaces, written explanations and voice discussions. The report emphasized sustained understanding rather than merely chasing short term campaigns. Its membership and activity numbers are the organizer's own account, but the described practices show a recognizable form of participation: translating unfamiliar tools into a language and setting where people can ask questions.
This is distinct from an official national chapter or evidence that a whole language community endorses the network.
A January 2026 SONEX thread illustrates the limits of ecosystem loyalty. The author lida reported broken interactions and poor communication from the application. Other posters discussed their own concerns, while Astar Foundation moderator Gaius_sama challenged the thread's relevance to Astar and closed it. These are contested reports, not a verified finding of fraud or a chain wide failure. They nevertheless preserve a concrete accountability dispute: users sought answers through a familiar community forum when an application associated with the broader ecosystem disappointed them.
Entertainment distribution needs specific products
The March 2025 LINE announcement concerned four named mini applications, including Sleepagotchi LITE and Farm Frens, with integrations described as forthcoming. It should not be expanded into a claim that every LINE service moved to Soneium or that all LINE users became blockchain users. Its practical attraction was distribution inside a familiar interface. The hard test is whether a particular game provides an appealing reason to return once the novelty of connecting a wallet or claiming a promotional reward has passed.
The KENDRIX announcement identified music registration and rights management as another use case, linking JASRAC's creator platform with Soneium. Recording an assertion and its timestamp can give a dispute an inspectable history. It cannot automatically determine whether the person making the assertion created the work or owns every relevant right. The announcement is strongest as evidence of an institutional integration and intended workflow. Claims about legal ownership or improved income still need the underlying rights arrangements and actual outcomes, not simply a transaction hash.
The end of Score and a new recruitment phase
Soneium closed Score after twelve seasons in July 2026. The closing post described repeated quests and wallet bound badges, with a final qualifying badge rather than an announced native token distribution. This gives the community a ritual history: showing up, completing tasks and retaining evidence of participation. The August ambassador announcement then emphasized explanation, regional organizing and helping newcomers use applications. It expressly warned ambassadors against unofficial claims about tokens or rewards.
Recognition and contribution can matter without becoming a contractual entitlement to an airdrop.
The September 28, 2026 DayOneDream announcement extended the entertainment thesis into tokenized K-pop intellectual property and associated revenue streams through WAVIST. It described a partnership and future expansion subject to eligibility and regulatory requirements. That is narrower than an unrestricted right for every fan to receive royalties from any artist. Readers should identify the specific instrument, issuer, rights and distribution terms before treating an IP themed token as ownership.
The announcement establishes the direction being pursued; it does not settle the economics or accessibility of every future product.
