The Linux Foundation announced plans for LF Decentralized Trust in June 2024, extending the scope of its blockchain and identity collaboration. Its 2024 annual report records the organization's formation and the inclusion of Hyperledger projects. The name describes an open-source ecosystem and organizational home, not a single blockchain, cryptocurrency, or exchange. Individual projects retain distinct software designs, contributors, governance arrangements, and deployment choices.

Why an umbrella matters
Shared governance processes, collaboration infrastructure, and project stewardship can help organizations maintain software used across competing businesses. For example, two institutions might contribute to the same ledger framework while operating unrelated networks with different participants and policies. An umbrella can support that collaboration without processing their transactions itself. Membership or participation should therefore be read as an organizational relationship rather than evidence that a particular product has passed a universal security certification.

Evaluating a specific implementation
When researching an enterprise ledger, identify the actual project, release, consensus configuration, permission model, and production operator. A claim that something uses Hyperledger or LF Decentralized Trust technology is too broad to explain its privacy or trust assumptions. Software can be open source while a deployed network remains permissioned and centrally administered. Separate the foundation's role in stewardship from the legal and operational responsibilities of the institutions running a particular system or holding customer assets.
