The original record
The BitcoinTalk thread titled I AM HODLING was posted by GameKyuubi in December 2013. The author's message describes a personal decision to hold during volatile trading and acknowledges the spelling error. That primary post provides a firmer basis for the term's documented popularization than later explanations that present it solely as an acronym. Subsequent communities have adapted the word into slogans, jokes, and identities beyond the original situation.

Language is not a financial model
Holding avoids some decisions involved in frequent trading, but it does not eliminate asset-price risk, custody failure, or the possibility that a project never recovers. The original post is a participant's opinion, not evidence that buying any token and waiting will be profitable. Bitcoin's protocol design and a holder's investment outcome are also separate questions. A network can continue processing valid transactions while its market price falls substantially.

Using the term precisely
A speaker may mean long-term conviction, unwillingness to realize a loss, or simply a humorous community greeting. Context matters. In an encyclopedia, preserve that cultural range while distinguishing an observed historical source from later folklore. The phrase should not be used to dismiss questions about concentration, security, or whether a token gives holders meaningful rights. An explanation can respect the joke and still make clear that a memorable slogan does not substitute for understanding an asset or a personal decision.
