Provenance Blockchain
Financial records, programmable permissions and an argument over who benefits.
Provenance is a public proof-of-stake blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK for financial applications and asset records. HASH supports fees, staking and governance. Its history includes a migration from private infrastructure, governance-imposed vesting and Figure's 2026 Foundation stewardship. Tokenized assets, Figure shares and HASH carry different roles and rights.

A financial ledger with a native token
Provenance Blockchain is an application-focused public network, not the generic concept of proving where an object came from. Its custom modules handle asset issuance, records, permissions, exchange and other financial operations. HASH is the native network token, while assets recorded or issued through those modules can have different issuers and transfer rules. A mortgage record, a restricted security and a freely transferable coin therefore should not be grouped together as one kind of holding. Understanding the network starts with identifying the object and the authority attached to it.
HASH's documented functions include paying network charges, staking with validators and participating in governance. These are protocol roles rather than ownership of Figure's operating business or a claim on every asset represented on the chain. The current token guide also describes fee auctions and a changing economic model. That guide is useful for understanding the intended mechanism, but numerical claims about live inflation or burn activity need dated parameters and transactions.
A token utility diagram cannot establish either the present fee flow or the market price that investors will assign to it.
From Figure's private system to a public network
The project's own changelog traces its beginnings to a Hyperledger Fabric-derived private network created by Figure Technologies in 2018. A later private Cosmos implementation preceded the public version. The January 27, 2021 beta entry explicitly described migration work still underway and warned that the first public testnet was not production-ready. This history matters because a date attached to Figure's earliest blockchain use is not necessarily the launch date of today's public chain.
The network inherited a financial-services purpose while changing the infrastructure through which participation and validation occurred.
The Foundation's Q2 2024 update places the current protocol's release in April 2021 and describes a network centered on financial assets, fees and validators. It also reported that the earlier DLOB trading interface had closed while Figure Markets provided HASH access. Those are historical service changes, not timeless instructions on where a holder can trade today. Even official retrospective figures need their reporting period.
The same update's token supply and distribution description predates subsequent governance changes, so it should not be silently reused as a current tokenomics fact sheet.
What staking actually secures
Provenance uses bonded HASH to weight validator participation. Validators propose and validate blocks, while delegators choose operators to support. The staking documentation frames the bond as collateral behind validation rather than a deposit protected against loss. Delegation does not transfer every operational decision to the holder; it supports an operator whose software, uptime and signing practices matter. A public validator set also need not be evenly distributed.
An accurate assessment would compare voting power and independent control, rather than simply counting server names or treating institutional branding as proof of decentralization.
The validator FAQ explains commission settings, monitoring responsibilities and slashing for faults such as double signing. Delegators share exposure to their chosen validator's conduct. The documentation also describes an unbonding delay, which separates the decision to stop staking from the ability to spend the released balance. Exact parameters should be checked against the current network rather than an old worked example.
Choosing an operator is therefore a technical and governance decision as well as a fee comparison: signing security, communications and upgrade readiness influence the service being purchased.
Markers define permissions as well as supply
A marker is a specialized account used to manage an asset denomination and its permissions. The marker module can represent ordinary coins or restricted assets whose movement requires an authorized transfer process. Required attributes can establish which receiving accounts qualify, and some configurations permit forced transfers by a designated authority. These are deliberate capabilities for financial applications. They also mean that a token appearing in a self-custody wallet is not automatically unrestricted bearer property.
Readers should inspect the particular marker's configuration and the governing asset terms before assuming every transfer is solely their decision.
The separate sanction module illustrates the distinction between public validation and unconditional spending. Governance messages can restrict accounts and later remove restrictions, while configured deposit thresholds can create temporary effects during a proposal. The documentation explains how those temporary restrictions expire when governance resolves the matter. This is a description of available protocol machinery, not a claim that any particular address is sanctioned now.
Financial operators may value enforceable controls; users seeking censorship resistance should evaluate the same controls as a source of discretionary power.
Private documents and public evidence
The metadata module organizes references into scopes, sessions and records, with specifications defining the required parties and structure. It can link public state to information stored elsewhere and identify who may receive off-chain data. The resulting audit trail is useful for coordinating a financial process without placing all underlying documents on a public ledger. However, a reference is not the document itself. Access, retention and the ability to reproduce the record remain important.
Losing the external evidence can weaken what a reader can independently establish from an otherwise intact blockchain entry.
The asset lifecycle guide describes keeping sensitive information outside the chain while recording hashes that a counterparty can later compare with supplied data. Matching a hash shows that the disclosed bytes match the committed version. It does not, by itself, prove that an appraisal was accurate, a borrower will repay or an issuer has legal title. Those questions depend on the underlying process and evidence. Provenance's usefulness is in recording and coordinating attestations; it does not turn every statement entered by a financial institution into an independently verified fact.
Settlement rules and the cost of access
The exchange module keeps funds under holds in the participating accounts and coordinates settlement between counterparties. A hold prevents committed funds from being spent elsewhere while the relevant order or settlement process is active. Markets have their own configuration and fee behavior. This is different from assuming that every transaction is a swap through one common automated market maker. Application operators still need to define assets, permissions, pricing and counterparties, while the chain supplies reusable mechanisms.
A trade's execution rules must be understood at both the module and product level.
The working FAQ explicitly warns that HASH is not a direct proxy for total value locked or Figure's business growth. Its explanations distinguish chain activity from speculative trading demand and discuss how validators and delegators receive fees. That is a useful corrective to promotional comparisons based solely on the nominal value of assets recorded. A large loan balance can remain on a ledger without producing frequent transactions.
Readers examining an economic thesis need the actual charged operations, fee recipients and recurring costs, not just a headline total that bundles different asset categories.
When governance changed spendable balances
The May 2025 lockup proposal sought to impose a four-year vesting schedule on non-retail HASH holdings above a threshold while protecting qualifying public-market purchases. It linked the plan to exchange listing requirements and incorporated exceptions and appeal procedures. The Foundation's Q2 recap subsequently records the May 22 approval and implementation. This was more consequential than an ordinary voluntary staking choice: governance changed how affected existing balances could be spent.
The exemptions, classification process and power to revise the schedule belong in the network's history alongside its technical upgrades.
The June 10 appeals proposal identified thirty-three accounts for release from the new vesting arrangement after the Foundation reviewed their cases. It proposed converting a fixed set of vesting accounts back into ordinary accounts through an upgrade. The record shows why implementation details matter to holders: a broad policy can misclassify particular balances and require an explicit correction. An appeals announcement is not evidence that every possible claim was accepted.
It documents an institutional review process and a proposed chain change, with the subsequent vote and execution supplying separate evidence of completion.
Figure's mandate and its limits
The January 12, 2026 proposal asked HASH holders to give Figure responsibility for the Foundation's day-to-day operations, including ecosystem coordination and support for protocol development. It offered resource commitments, tokenomics work and a conditional burn commitment, while saying that Foundation-held HASH would not be used to influence the vote. The proposal framed this as an operational mandate subject to community reversal. That framing is the proposers' position, not a proof that economic dependence disappears.
Resources, token holdings and formal voting powers remain distinct sources of influence.
Figure's January 21 announcement states that the community approved the change on January 14. It said the Foundation would remain independent, protocol decisions would continue through HASH governance and Figure held roughly a quarter of outstanding HASH at that time. These disclosures make Figure central to the account without making the company synonymous with the network. The important ongoing questions are whether promised reporting appears, third-party activity develops and governance can meaningfully change direction.
Approval of stewardship does not automatically demonstrate execution of every later burn, utility program or economic redesign.
Permissioned assets still need rigorous authorization
The May 1, 2026 v1.28.0 release introduced substantial technical changes, including a newer Cosmos SDK, IBC v2 support and the ability to store smart contracts without a governance proposal. The distinction between publishing software and activating it on a chain remains important when reconstructing dates. Release notes are evidence of the available implementation and its intended migration path. They also challenge an overly narrow description of Provenance as a ledger incapable of supporting broader applications.
Product restrictions and protocol capabilities are related, but they are not identical.
Trail of Bits researchers Pawel Platek and Denys Pakizh disclosed a marker authorization defect in August 2026. A stale supply field could let an account with no tokens pass a supposed full-ownership check. Their report identified eighty-two affected markers and distinguished a zero-supply mitigation shipped in May from a fuller correction in June. It describes potential unauthorized minting and escrow withdrawals, not confirmed theft.
The lesson is especially relevant to a financial chain: a carefully designed permission model still fails if the code compares against the wrong state or treats an empty default as sufficient authority.
How ordinary participants encounter the network
The Content Guild proposal invited community writers and researchers to help explain the ecosystem, with compensation planned retrospectively after Foundation recapitalization and asset migration. It also described recognition through submitted news and possible future points. This is a concrete participation mechanism, but an invitation is not proof that every reward was paid or that points carry a token entitlement. Editorial incentives deserve disclosure because community-produced material can mix genuine education with ecosystem promotion.
Readers benefit from knowing who requested the work and how the contributor expected to be compensated.
The voting guide requires HASH holders to delegate and use a supported wallet to participate through the explorer. It also records wallet compatibility limitations at the time of writing. The practical ability to vote is therefore narrower than merely seeing HASH in an exchange balance. A holder needs access to the appropriate account and transaction flow. Custody products, voting interfaces and the network can evolve independently, so a failed wallet connection is not automatically evidence that governance itself has stopped. Check the supported path and the proposal's actual voting window.
Adoption enthusiasm meets concentration and custody
In an August 2026 Reddit discussion, DoU92 expressed interest in Figure's financial applications while questioning validator concentration. The post's numerical estimates and belief that a narrow application scope reduced security risk are the author's claims, not independently established measurements. The useful historical evidence is the tension itself: enthusiasm for institutional use coexisted with concern about who controlled validation.
A small discussion cannot establish representative sentiment, and its security assumptions need to be tested against actual code and disclosures rather than accepted because the applications involve regulated businesses.
Another original holder record is less grand but equally revealing. thechickencoups asked why Tangem listed Provenance while marking it temporarily unsupported, because the author wanted to move HASH into cold storage. Replies did not establish a definitive resolution. This shows a custody need that market capitalization and partnership announcements do not answer. A chain can have institutional infrastructure while a particular retail device or application remains unsupported.
The historical request should not be reused as a current verdict on Tangem compatibility; its value is evidence of what one holder needed.
A financial-use thesis still needs a mechanism
In a June 2024 Cosmos discussion, cocoroos recommended HASH on the basis of real-world assets, while BrianS911 described a holding and modest staking activity. These short comments show an early investor association between financial utility and token opportunity. They contain neither a valuation model nor proof of a durable return. Their brevity is part of the record, so no elaborate collective doctrine should be invented around them. The sensible follow-up is to identify how use generates fees, how those fees reach participants and how changing liquidity affects holders.
MrNasdog's 2026 supply analysis takes a different approach, comparing vesting releases, mint parameters and burn observations rather than treating all supply growth as new issuance. Its argument is that a fixed total can coexist with increasing tradable supply. The page's dated estimates remain that researcher's calculations and need replication, especially when documentation describes an economic mechanism more broadly than the current configuration. This distinction is valuable even without adopting a numerical forecast.
Released tokens, newly minted tokens and destroyed tokens are different events, and a serious HASH thesis must keep them separate.
