Ink
Kraken's route from exchange accounts into a DeFi rollup.
Ink is an Ethereum OP Stack network introduced by Kraken and launched in December 2024. It uses ETH for gas. Its DeFi applications, proposed INK token integrations and Kraken's separate Ink Points loyalty program require different evidence about control, eligibility and economic rights.

An exchange's route into open applications
Kraken introduced Ink on October 24, 2024, as an Ethereum layer 2 focused on decentralized finance. The business thesis was distribution: people already using an exchange could reach independent on-chain applications with fewer unfamiliar steps. The launch invitation included a commemorative NFT and a Bangkok developer event. Those early rituals tied a new chain to an established brand while giving builders a reason to gather before the public network existed.
The November testnet guide invited developers to deploy products, investigate bugs and test against Sepolia without putting real assets at stake. That separation is essential when reading early activity figures. Repeated test transactions demonstrate software exercise and interest; they are not trading revenue or committed customer capital. The test network also gave teams a common place to prepare wallet connections and contracts before asking ordinary users to interact with production applications.
Mainnet opened on December 18, earlier than the first-quarter 2025 schedule originally discussed. Kraken attributed the acceleration to builder interest and testing progress. Its announcement mixed concrete availability with the next decentralization goal, so the date should not be used to imply that every promised protection was already complete. The launch record also identifies ETH as gas. A chain carrying the Ink name does not require every transaction to consume a separate token with the same name.
What Ink runs and what it does not guarantee
Ink's documentation describes an OP Stack network with Solidity and EVM compatibility, initially one-second blocks and a focus on DeFi. It presents aggregation, automation and simpler interfaces as differentiators. These goals concern access and execution. They do not establish that a listed lending market is suitable for every user or that an exchange's operational reputation transfers automatically to unrelated smart contracts. A deployable contract can still contain economic flaws or unsafe permissions.
Mainnet is network 57073 and uses ETH; Ink Sepolia is a separate test environment. These identifiers are more reliable for operational decisions than a logo or ticker. A wallet may display an Ethereum-style address while needing the correct chain selected to show the funds. The network reference provides multiple RPC endpoints, which also lets developers separate a single provider's outage from a failure of the chain itself.
Fast feedback before final settlement
Ink's subblocks stream publishes partial block information roughly every 200 milliseconds. Its own RPC guide explicitly calls this a preconfirmation with the sequencer's trust assumption. Streamed state roots and block hashes are zero placeholders, not authoritative finalized records. A trading interface can use the early result to feel responsive while still marking it provisional. Treating that display as final Ethereum settlement would discard the very limitation the documentation asks developers to preserve.
The fee guide divides a transaction's charge into execution on Ink and publishing data to Ethereum. This helps explain why cheap local computation does not make the total charge permanently fixed. A busy settlement layer or a more data-heavy action can affect costs even when the local interface is responsive. Fee comparisons should therefore specify the action and observed conditions rather than turn a small transfer's cost into a promise about every future contract call.
Ink's paymaster documentation shows another kind of simplification: users can reimburse gas in supported stablecoins through particular account and EntryPoint arrangements. Its two deployment versions have different token support and first-operation requirements. The convenience is conditional, not a change of native gas asset. An application must use the appropriate deployment and quote flow; having a stablecoin in an ordinary address does not by itself guarantee that any wallet can submit a transaction without ETH.
Fault proofs, operators and public scrutiny
Optimism's January 30, 2025 governance update reported Ink running permissionless fault proofs. This is stronger evidence of the deployed milestone than the launch announcement's future target. It means the system opened an important challenge function to outside participants. It does not mean all operating authority disappeared. Claims about decentralization should still identify who orders transactions, changes configuration and authorizes upgrades, rather than compress these separate responsibilities into a single stage label.
Ink's January 2025 Security Council nomination made the connection to Kraken explicit, citing experience with wallet operations and incident response. Delegates including kaereste supported advancing the nomination because they believed this expertise would be useful. The thread documents a governance process and its participants' reasoning. It should not be rewritten as proof that a brand can never fail, nor as evidence that an INK holder individually controls security actions.
LlamaRisk's early network review distinguished assets bridged to Ink from assets actually used in DeFi and examined concentrated liquidity, sequencer control and upgrade arrangements. Those observations are a dated risk assessment, not live parameter verification. They show why a network can have substantial bridged balances while still offering limited market depth for liquidation. The useful lesson is to inspect executable liquidity and control paths separately from headline totals when evaluating a new lending deployment.
Stablecoins and wrapped collateral are different promises
USDT0 funding on Ink was announced in January 2025. Kraken described it as an omnichain representation backed by USDT locked on Ethereum and using LayerZero's token standard. That structure adds a cross-chain mechanism to the underlying stablecoin relationship. It is not the same as a direct bank balance. The announcement itself warns that a stablecoin label does not guarantee a stable secondary-market price or reserves sufficient for every redemption circumstance.
Kraken added USDC deposits and withdrawals over Ink in October 2025. This was a specific exchange integration that reduced the need for a separate bridging step for supported funding flows. It did not make every network carrying USDC interchangeable. The announcement tells customers to choose the supported deposit network. Understanding that operational boundary is more useful than assuming a familiar ticker means the recipient can credit any representation arriving at an Ethereum-style address.
The September 2026 kHYPE introduction provides a different example: a wrapped asset backed by HYPE held by Kraken, with contract and custody links for inspection. Its purpose is to make exposure usable in Ink applications. A holder consequently depends on the wrapper's custody and redemption arrangement as well as the application using it. Verification of a reserve address is relevant evidence, but it should not be confused with elimination of custodian, contract or collateral-market risk.
Ink's bridge directory lists both native-style interfaces and solver or relayer routes. Across, for example, offers transfers that avoid waiting for the normal seven-day exit period by using a different mechanism. That speed is not evidence that the underlying optimistic settlement delay vanished. Users should compare the actual token delivered, route, liquidity and fee. The directory explicitly leaves route risk with the user rather than guaranteeing every service listed in it.
The Aave codebase and the question of control
In June 2025, the Ink Foundation and ACI proposed a white-label Aave V3 instance. It would initially be centrally managed by the Foundation, share revenue with Aave and sit outside Aave DAO's Umbrella coverage. Delegates asked why this structure was preferable to a regular Aave deployment and how service-provider commitments would be enforced. The distinction is substantive: familiar lending software does not imply familiar governance or identical protection arrangements.
BGD Labs explained the friendly-fork model separately: partners could use Aave infrastructure while retaining management and strategy. Technical contributors would help with configuration and compatibility, but the fork manager remained responsible for choices such as which assets to list. This is a useful guide to reading a 'powered by' label. It identifies software lineage and a working relationship, without transferring all operational decisions or every economic liability to the original protocol's community.
The oracle directory lists several available services, including Chainlink, Pyth and API3. Availability gives developers choices; it does not settle which feed is appropriate for a particular collateral market. The feed's asset, update behavior and integration must fit the application's assumptions. A lending contract can be technically compatible with Ink and still be poorly configured for thin liquidity or a volatile asset. Infrastructure coverage is one input to product safety, not its conclusion.
INK, gas and product plans
Kraken's July 2025 integration announcement said a subsidiary of the independent Ink Foundation would issue INK and described future distribution to eligible customers and ecosystem participants. It also emphasized plans to connect on-chain protocols to existing products. The announcement was a plan with further milestones to come, not a completed airdrop receipt. This reading links the verified project identity while keeping the network's ETH gas requirement separate from whatever rights the token's implemented terms provide.
A loyalty season is not a token balance
Ink Points arrived on Kraken Pro in April 2026, with activity counted from April 6. The launch described levels, boosts and a leaderboard while deliberately withholding a complete account of future benefits. Its legal qualification was much clearer: points were non-tokenized, non-redeemable and had no cash value. That qualification should remain visible when recording the campaign. Trading fees and exposure are real even when the hoped-for reward attached to an engagement score is uncertain.
The August Price Predictor added a different daily ritual: a direction prediction, points for correct calls and entries into a monthly draw. The announcement said no purchase was necessary and distinguished points from draw entries. This is evidence of a product engagement strategy, not a model for profitable forecasting. It also gives historians something more concrete than social follower counts: an exchange was deliberately encouraging repeated app visits on days when a customer might not trade.
The support discussion on April 13 shows why clarity mattered. Users asked what points could do, and a support reply acknowledged that fuller details were still coming. Follow-up comments asked where to find the balance and repeated the request for an explanation. These are specific reports from a small thread, not proof of a universal failure. They document the gap between a campaign's excitement and the information customers needed to decide how much attention to give it.
Shipped work and changing grant programs
Spark asks applicants for a usable product and verifiable evidence, such as contracts, analytics and actual activity. Its priorities include Tydro lending integrations, Nado trading tools, risk dashboards and infrastructure. This defines an ecosystem strategy more precisely than the phrase 'supporting builders': the program is looking for work that makes particular financial services useful. The existence of a priority does not prove that every funded tool creates lasting demand, but it gives reviewers an observable standard for judging outcomes.
Forge's page preserves its milestone-based funding model, but the notice at the top now says it no longer accepts applications and has been replaced by Inkworks. An encyclopedia should preserve that history without sending readers to a closed program. Inkworks describes a six-week cohort, direct engineering time and non-dilutive milestone funding, with follow-on investment on separate terms. Both records show a preference for focused teams and demonstrated execution rather than open-ended community promises.
Echo addressed a different group: teams with verifiable products shipped before November 1, 2025. Its submissions closed on March 4, 2026, and the page distinguishes product work from moderation, marketing and undeployed ideas. Recognition included a one-time grant and optional public acknowledgment. These boundaries reveal who a reward program counted as an early contributor; they should not be expanded into a claim that every early community member was owed the same award.
Brand loyalty, speculation and everyday friction
December 2024 r/ethtrader replies celebrated Kraken's reputation, made wordplay about the Ink name and immediately wondered about an airdrop. Other participants doubted one was needed. The small exchange captures several motivations arriving together: trust in a known exchange, enjoyment of a new identity and speculation about rewards. It does not establish that most users shared one motive, and the hindsight of later announcements should not erase the uncertainty present at launch.
A later June 2025 token discussion mixed hopes for an allocation with a comment that the absence of token governance might mean less drama. That is a participant's preference, not proof that centralized decisions cannot create conflict. Separately, an August wallet-support thread reported ETH apparently missing after an Ink withdrawal; support pointed to a completed chain transaction, while replies discussed wallet display support. Network adoption also depends on solving such mundane confusion, not just announcing more applications.
