Ronin
An Axie homeland, a gaming economy, and a changing Ethereum relationship
Ronin began as Axie Infinity's Ethereum sidechain and completed an OP Stack migration in May 2026 while retaining RON for gas. Its history includes bridge failures, expanded access for builders, and a move from staking rewards to application incentives. Later contract changes require care when describing its proof system and security.

A chain built around players
Axie Infinity introduced Ronin mainnet on February 1, 2021 as an Ethereum sidechain. The first stage moved land and item assets, rather than every part of the game at once. High Ethereum transaction fees were the practical problem. The announcement promised a limited commemorative land item for early migration, with its identifier determined by migration order. Participation therefore had a social meaning as well as a technical one: moving early became a visible part of a player's history.
The same announcement still described the Axie migration as forthcoming, so the launch date should not imply a single simultaneous cutover.
RON arrived later than the network. Ronin's 2023 tokenomics explanation identifies January 2022 as the token launch and describes distribution through Katana rewards, secondary markets and shareholder allocations. Its introduction inconsistently says 2021, but its substantive launch section and conclusion both say 2022. That distinction matters when reconstructing the economy: a game chain can exist before its gas asset has the later distribution and trading arrangements. The document also separates an unlocked allocation from tokens actually entering circulation through a particular program.
Its numerical allocation snapshot belongs to April 2023, not the present.
The 2022 breach and the problem with shared control
The bridge attack occurred on March 23, 2022; public disclosure followed on March 29. Jonathan Becker's contemporaneous transaction analysis traces two withdrawals totaling 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC. It shows why valid signatures do not necessarily mean legitimate authorization: the withdrawal passed the five-signature threshold after signing authority was compromised. Becker links the attack to Sky Mavis access and an unretracted Axie DAO delegation. This is an independent original analysis, not an official Ronin postmortem.
Its transaction evidence supports the withdrawal sequence without requiring an uncertain dollar valuation at a later market price.
Ronin's April 5 response called for more independent validators and changes to bridge controls. It named five organizations being onboarded and set a goal of at least 21 independent nodes within three months. Withdrawal limits and stronger governance functions were proposed work, not features proven live by that post. The lesson of the response was organizational as well as cryptographic: increasing the number of listed signers helps only when their control and operational dependencies are meaningfully separate.
The period when staking shaped participation
The team's retrospective records mainnet staking opening on March 30, 2023, followed by the DPoS hard fork and staking rewards on April 12. Those are related but distinct milestones. Delegation made RON participation more than trading a token, while validators became a visible part of the community. The same retrospective dates Pixels' Ronin migration to October 31 and records the launch of Mavis Market and Ronin Name Service. These developments broadened the network beyond the original Axie experience.
The retrospective's historical user counts and reward totals should not be read as today's active population or current yield.
In a May 2023 discussion, Slippytoe weighed attractive WETH/RON farming rewards against discomfort about the risks. A follow-up explicitly linked confidence in the position to RON's future value and the possibility of another network hack. Other participants compared staking and liquidity incentives. This was a small conversation among holders, not a survey of Ronin sentiment. It nevertheless records how the staking era encouraged people to combine a belief in the games with expectations about passive income, custody and token prices.
Another incident, and what the audit actually says
Verichains' August 21, 2024 report attributes the August 6 bridge incident to a faulty upgrade deployment script. Its review covered a specified bridge-contract revision, the proposed repair, withdrawal hardening and selected dependencies. That scope is narrower than a certification of the entire network. The report also contains a revealing inconsistency: its executive summary says an issue was resolved, while the findings table marks the batch-deposit msg.value issue open. It says previously corrected vulnerable code had been reintroduced.
The document supports an account of deployment and regression risks; it does not establish that every vulnerability remained open indefinitely or that every later bridge was unsafe.
The associated repair is visible in the developers' public pull request 65. Opened by nxqbao on August 8 and merged on August 12, it describes relaying an Ethereum proposal that calls onBridgeOperatorsAdded to force an operator-weight update and upgrades MainchainGatewayV3. A merged repair is evidence of the engineering response, not proof of every production transaction needed to apply it. Reading the proposal beside the audit keeps three separate questions visible: what went wrong, what developers changed, and which deployed system a user is actually trusting.
Bridges and markets are separate parts of the economy
Ronin announced completion of its legacy bridge migration to Chainlink CCIP on April 25, 2025. The statement identifies supported tokens and explains a separate WBTC contract migration. It also notes that a deprecated bridge interface remained for people who had not claimed older Ethereum withdrawals. Those details explain why multiple bridge screens and token representations can coexist without being interchangeable. This historical migration is not a guarantee that every Ronin token, route or later Chainlink version shares the same verification rules.
A bridge product and the chain's own state-validation system are different dependencies.
Katana V3 launched in December 2024 with concentrated liquidity positions, fee tiers and routing across V2 and V3 pools. Positions can target a price interval and are represented by ERC-721 tokens. This changes what it means to provide liquidity: the position has a selected range rather than simply representing a share of one uniform pool. The announcement promotes capital efficiency and better execution, but those benefits should not be converted into a promise of profit.
A range choice, changing token prices, trading activity and incentive schedules all matter when evaluating the holder's actual experience.
What changed when Ronin opened
The January 20, 2025 supply notice described an accounting and wallet-management change, not a new mint. Previously excluded unlocked holdings were to move into new multisignature wallets and be counted as circulating; the stated maximum remained one billion RON. Sky Mavis also committed to relocking part of its unlocked allocation over two years. A sudden increase in an aggregator's reported circulating supply can therefore reflect classification as well as fresh distribution. The notice itself said no tokens were sold as part of this operation.
That is a claim about this specific operation, not every later holder's sales.
On February 12, 2025, the team announced removal of the contract-deployment allowlist. An outside developer could now deploy on Ronin mainnet without prior permission. This was a concrete opening of application access. It did not, by itself, make sequencer operation, bridge administration or protocol upgrades permissionless. The distinction becomes especially important when reading the team's celebratory language about an open network: deployment rights answer who may publish software, while validation and upgrade rights answer who can determine or alter the system beneath that software.
From a migration proposal to a completed migration
The August 2025 homecoming plan reframed Ronin as a platform for gamified experiences beyond conventional games. It proposed redirecting rewards toward builders and described stake managers as part of that design. An April 20, 2026 amendment on the same page explicitly removed stake managers, even though older paragraphs remain below it. This is a useful example of why an appealing roadmap cannot serve as a current product manual.
The contemporaneous comment by Anderlya questioned why Ronin should attach itself to Ethereum instead of developing its own blockchain identity, showing that the strategic change was not received as self-evident.
A September 9, 2025 announcement said governing validators had chosen the OP Stack. It described milestone-based grants and cooperation with Optimism, Eigen Labs and Boundless. These were reasons for choosing infrastructure and expectations about future support, not measured transaction capacity or proof of inherited security. The publication still framed integration as work to come and said RON would remain the gas token. A provider selection marks a strategic decision; it does not date the completion of the system that provider will help build.
Builder rewards replaced the old staking bargain
The May 13 completion announcement confirmed Conduit's migration of Ronin to the OP Stack while preserving RON gas. It said annual reward emissions fell from 45 million RON to five million, with rewards going to builders through Proof of Distribution. Its FAQ stated there was currently no replacement way to stake RON and earn rewards, and it corrected an earlier inflation estimate to approximately 1.2%. This changed who receives incentives and why. Historical delegation yields describe a discontinued arrangement.
The post still described Kailua proofs as future work, so migration alone did not establish their deployment.
By July, the ecosystem team reported distributing more than 410,000 RON in the first PoD season. More instructively, it acknowledged Sybil activity and artificial engagement, and said the scoring system had been adjusted. The team also observed people using the leaderboard to discover games. Both statements describe the publisher's experience, rather than independently audited user quality. They expose the hard problem behind the program: a measurable action can represent useful play, a sponsored interaction or someone optimizing for a reward.
A leaderboard needs interpretation before it can become evidence of durable demand.
The proof system changed after launch
An Ethereum transaction provides direct evidence of a later proof-system setting: on July 1, the Ronin control Safe registered a game implementation under type 1337 and the AnchorStateRegistry emitted RespectedGameTypeSet with that value. The receipt also records a verifier implementation upgrade. These are observable contract changes, rather than an inference from a partnership announcement. They establish that the accepted game setting changed on that date; they do not independently prove that all possible disputes or withdrawals were correct.
On September 7, another successful Safe transaction changed the anchor's respected game type to 1. The decoded receipt records that exact event. L2BEAT identifies it as the fallback from Kailua to the permissioned dispute game. A reader should therefore avoid treating the July activation as an unbroken guarantee of current ZK protection. The dated setter transaction proves the change of setting, while the interpretation of the resulting security model requires the relevant code, configured roles and subsequent upgrades.
What can and cannot be concluded from a security dashboard
L2BEAT's reviewed account describes EigenDA v2 data availability, permissioned proposal and challenge roles, no enforced exit window for upgrades, and a five-of-six Ronin/Conduit control Safe. It also warns that recent changes may make its information outdated. Its explanation identifies a problematic permissioned-game prestate and says the EigenDA certificate verifier is not used in the withdrawal path. These are the analyst's configuration and security findings, not independently reproduced conclusions of this article.
A generic statement that Ronin inherits all of Ethereum's security would omit the particular data, operator and upgrade assumptions the review raises.
The freshness warning is substantive. A successful September 21 Ethereum transaction changed several Ronin contract implementations, including the anchor, portal and dispute-game factory, and installed a new type-1 game implementation. The transaction is direct evidence of an upgrade after the September fallback. It is not, by itself, evidence that the prestate issue was fixed or that Kailua returned. The article consequently preserves the dated receipt history without claiming to have re-audited the replacement bytecode or proved the present behavior of every withdrawal path.
L2BEAT's source history makes the evidence boundary clearer: several late-September entries explicitly describe configuration or verification changes against an earlier discovery snapshot, rather than new on-chain discovery. A recently edited repository page can therefore contain older observations. For a current security decision, the material checks are the deployed implementations, accepted game configuration and actual administrator permissions at a stated block. An updated article date alone cannot substitute for those checks.
Making the chain disappear from the first minute of play
Craft World's June 2026 account describes a gradual entry into on-chain play. A newcomer can begin as a guest, link an email or social login, and receive a VOYA ID smart wallet. The game sponsors ordinary gameplay gas and routes its exchange through Katana, while allowing an external wallet connection later. This is the developer's account of its own integration, not proof that every Ronin game behaves this way. The design addresses a real tension in the RON story: a network can charge gas while a player never personally acquires gas tokens for each action. Someone else absorbs that cost.
The tension was already visible in kniad's November 2021 discussion about RON's purpose. llamaiam worried about moving from free transactions to paid gas, while _ZooAnimal_ pointed to the inconvenience of keeping RON in every scholar account. These were practical questions from participants in Axie's delegated-playing economy, not opposition to blockchain in the abstract. Their comments help explain why fee sponsorship and wallet design matter as much to some players as consensus terminology.
They also caution against equating more accounts with more independent, willing purchasers of the gas asset.
Developer access still differs from editorial support
Ronin's July 2026 indie guide connects promotional support to progressively stronger evidence of a working game and user demand. Its September 1 update added a preliminary phase for solo and hobby developers after feedback in the Builders Discord. That phase requires no on-chain activity and includes informal showcases and public documentation. Later stages involve team review, project updates and distribution support. The guide also reserves discretion to withdraw promotion. Thus permission to deploy a contract is distinct from earning a featured position in the ecosystem's own channels.
The feedback influenced a documented workflow without proving that all builders have equal visibility.
The guide lists NFT and DEX trading volume, gas spending, contract volume, paying users and newly paying users as scoring inputs, while warning that the model can change. This creates a specific design incentive: recorded economic interactions can affect a developer's rewards and visibility. The listed weights describe that guide's version, so they should not be used as a permanent formula or a prediction of a project's payout.
BarefootShark's June 2022 proposal imagined a much broader RON economy: RON trading pairs and marketplace payments, better developer APIs, applications beyond games and easier conversion back into fiat. The same post demanded assurance against another hack. That combination captures a holder's ambition and its unresolved condition: expand utility, but also make leaving and trusting the system easier. The requested ranking and one-year horizon were aspirations, not a measured valuation model.
Later products should be compared with the individual requests rather than presented as proof that the author's entire dream came true.
Economic voting is not control of every protocol decision
The September 22 governance announcement proposed token-weighted voting for economic and treasury matters, with one RON corresponding to one vote and a 66% passing threshold. It placed protocol and security-critical decisions under validator governance for the time being. RGP-1, a possible treasury liquidity allocation to RON/WETH and RON/USDC pools, was scheduled to enter its process in October. As of this review, that was a proposal, not an approved transfer. The page also described screening through forum discussion and a team temperature check.
Token ownership therefore should not be mistaken for unrestricted power to submit and execute any change.
The same announcement says a RON Conviction multiplier had applied since September 10, using users' recent RON or wRON buying and selling to adjust builder scores. Honor Score was still being developed as a user-contribution measure. These additions reveal the team's evolving definition of valuable participation; neither establishes that token accumulation, game enjoyment and resistance to artificial activity are the same thing.
A July 2024 hardware-wallet discussion shows another limit to collective confidence. Accurate_Ad_90 stopped when a Ledger device could not decode a staking transaction and displayed a warning. Disastrous_Rate_1405 answered with their own staking experience and the existence of other large stakers; Reddit_AxieSupport asked for a support ticket. The thread supplies no demonstrated theft and no technical resolution. Its value is the disagreement about evidence: popularity and personal reassurance do not explain the exact transaction a device is asking someone to authorize.
The next checkpoints were still ahead on review day
The September 28 Karst notice scheduled mainnet activation for October 7, 2026 at 16:00:01 UTC. It described execution changes, a new contract-management system, an approximately 16.8-million transaction gas cap with Ethereum-deposit exceptions, and a required move from op-geth to op-reth. Saigon testing was reported as already underway. For September 30 readers, the mainnet activation remains a scheduled event. The announcement does not establish that the earlier proof-system concerns have been resolved.
Its stated no-downtime expectation is likewise a prediction to check against the eventual upgrade record.
